Title: Dress Codes:
Post by: Soaring Eagle on May 05, 2008, 04:27:44 AM
Here is a question for all.

I just came back from our State Tournament here in WA.
I was appalled at the lack of no standards for a dress code for the Team Event.
I just wrote a letter to my District voicing my concerns  on this.

Does the dress code exsist in your State/Local Tournament??

Two years ago I did the same thing in the state of indiana, people in cut offs, sleevless shirts and the such, mine fell on deaf ears, Dress codes unfortunately have fallen by the wayside

Alabama...

No hats/caps/hair rags

Jeans, shorts and non-collared shirts are allowed as long as they are tasteful and not torn. Collared shirts and long jeans/pants preferred.

New Jersey (county tournament):

Collared shirt, slacks or golf-ish type of shorts, no cutoffs, no "gym shorts", no hats.

So, in other words, just please show up dressed presentably.  Seems just like common sense to me.

We enforce our dress code in our High School conference.  When I was bowling conference singles a few (7 or 8) years ago..  We had parents complaining about buying their kids slacks..  They said that it's not a white collar sport and they can't afford decent looking pants, which is unfortunate.   You can find very very affordable pants at places like Kohls, and they can be worn at times other than bowling.  They will also be able to present themselves in a decent manner, in and outside of the bowl..  I just don't understand why some people think they cannot afford proper hygiene and be able to present themselves in a fashionable manner.

South Dakota just switched a couple years ago to having to have a collared shirt and pants. No hats, no shorts, no t shrits. A lot of people did not like it right away but I thought it was a good idea.
Minnesota from the day that I bowled state they must not have a dress code of any sort.

Pants, or dress shorts (jeans are fine too). Collared shirt, or a mock neck shirt, provided that it's from a bowling company.

No hats
No cutoffs
etc

Just so I can keep a running tally here are the results thus far.
States with some form of Dress code: Texas,Alabama,New Jersey, South Dakota, Massachusetts, New Mexico.

States without a Dress code. Montana, Indiana, Minnesota, Washington.

If these are incorrect let me know, As soon as I get some more states listed I plan on passing this information along to my association to see if I can get them to adopt a dress code.

Our local City Open adobted the NATIONALS dress code and our state uses a modified version of that, but still pretty classy...  the Women's tournaments is a different story - which I don't understand because they are the ones that wanted the Standard Opens to use the Nationals dress code...

There - 2 cents from AZ

On edit...

DRESS CODE RULE: Participants will wear a shirt with a “butterfly” type or “neck-high” collar with sleeves. Hemmed shorts*, skorts*, and jeans (with no holes) will be allowed. *NOTE: Skirt, skort, and short hemlines must extend beyond bowler’s fingertips when standing relaxed and arms are extended downward at the bowler’s side. Prohibited attire includes, but is not limited to: tank top shirts, cut offs, short shorts, headgear (allowed for medical reasons only), sweats, spandex. Shirts with inappropriate or vulgar pictures or writing will not be allowed. Failure to comply, bowler will not be allowed to bowl and cause forfeiture of entry fees. Tournament director or designee’s decision as to appropriateness of attire will be final.

Right off the entry...

I just worked at the Florida State Tournament (1st weekend of team events) and our dress code is enforced. No shorts above the knees, collared shirt and no hats. I observed one official looking closely at some guys shorts. In other words, no short shorts. Here in SE Florida we all live in shorts so it would be tough to ban them altogether. However, the vast majority of bowlers showed up in long pants.

CA Women's State requires a collared shirt, walking shorts, skort, skirt, or slacks.  The shirt can be sleevless as long as it has a collar.

The tournament dress codes here in France are very strict.

No Shorts.
No Jeans.
No hats.
Entrants obliged to wear a bowling shirt(with the name of their club on the back).

The thing is, everyone complies and nobody complains.

Interesting philosophy....

In general over here, it's no denim, collared shirt (mocks allowed) no shorts for men (ridiculous rule) some finals require a named shirt, but most don't.

No sleeveless shirts either. Womens shorts should be tailored.

I'd bet money than 95% of those kids walked in with 4/5 of the latest bowling balls....

I live in washington but have never bowled the state tournament.  I would have thought they'd have a dress code...guess not.

Most of our local tournaments do not have a dress code that I am aware of and about half the bowlers look like they just came out of a potato field.

The events are inside in a controlled environment I don’t understand why people have problem dressing decently.

The one that amazes me is the USBC nationals. There are always complaints about their dress code. Virtually all the bowlers will spend hundreds of dollars to travel and enter the tournament. Have a thousand in equipment with them but balk at spending 60 bucks for a decent pair of slacks and a shirt.

But the last few weddings and funerals I’ve been too I have been amazed at that the casual dress at these events.

Georgia: Dress Code

Old jeans overalls only, cutoff at the knees. Shirt, bra (for ladies or moobies), and confederate flag baseball hat optional.  You must bring a spit pouch if you will be chewing tobacco during the tournament.  Spirit award will be assigned to teams showing pride by wearing matching greasy handkerchiefs in rear pocket.

I have been to many tournaments and realized one thing, no one cares about how the participants are dressed as long as they are getting people in there.

Most people that I talk to say the dress codes are a farce. Personally I think that dress cosed are a sign of respect. Respect yourself and respect the game.

bigk975j8 has mentioned Texas, but it really does depend on the tournament.

City tournament for our area says pants, no shorts and no hats.  It doesn't specifically require collared shirts as many wear t-shirts.  But tank tops are not allowed.

When we bowled States last year, I believe it was the same.

Two weekends ago I bowled with my son in a Youth/Adult tournament and shorts were allowed, but it does say dress shorts.  Tanks and hats were not allowed.

Don't have all the details in front of me, but for your tally, Pennsylvania has a dress code for its state tournament.  Same stuff that's been posted:  No sleeveless shirts, or ragged shorts/pants, sweats, etc.

no jeans or jean shorts, no gym shorts or sweats no tank top and all shirts have to have a sleeve.

Shorts should come to your knees.
Women can wear sleeveless as long as it is a nice shirt no cut offs.
