drifting issue
« on: July 25, 2013, 09:29:39 AM »
I have developed a drift about 5 boards left now, and it is throwing off my angles. What are some tips to minimize this back down to 1-2 boards of drift?

Just do some approach only practicing.  Locate the board you start on and focus on the board you want to slide on.  Once you build that muscle memory back up, you should be good to go.  Of course, the drift could also be your subconcious telling you that you're playing further right than either you're comfortable with or than you need to be.
What would you be if you were attached to another object by an inclined plane, wrapped helically around an axis?

Are you playing a different place on the lane than normal?  I've seen guys drift 10 left when playing the gutter and the same guy will have no drift if playing left of 20.

If not this is the effect of something, you will need to figure the cause.  You wouldn't just start drifting 3 more left without reason.  Your body is compensating for something so you walk further left to either clear your hips or to keep from smashing the back of your ankle with the ball.  It could be something in your swing or something as simple as setup.

Footwork.  For a right hander your steps with your right foot should stay in front of you.  Kinda like walking a tight rope.  Proper footwork will also help your arm swing (see The Game Changer by Mark Baker).

I see guys get the first step with their right foot in place, but when it comes to their "power step" it's off to the right, thus causing the "drift".

If you are a lefty just reverse the above...

+1 on Gizmo and Notclay's responses. Here is my $.02 worth of suggestions. As you are standing on the approach, look at the markers at the foul line. Draw an imaginary line from your position on the approach to the marker directly in front of you at the foul line. It is almost as if you are lining up a putt. Use the imaginary line to guide you in your approach.

It sounds hokey, but I have tried it, and it helps.

Good luck.

+1 on notclay and gizmos reply.  Get Mark Bakers book, The Game Changer.  It will be the best $24.95 you have ever spent to help your bowling.  You can also check out Camp Bakes in Henderson Las Vegas.  His camps are now getting so popular, he is having to add additional clinics.  His classes are limited to 26 bowlers.  The cost of the clinic includes four and a half days of instruction, THREE bowling balls, breakfast and lunch, two shirts and eight to ten of the absolute best coaches in the World.

I would bet he could have you squared away in less than 5 minutes.

PS:  If you live in the San Diego area, he has clinics at Fountain Bowl every Saturday for $10.00.

PSS:  Been there, done that.

Good luck getting your problem squared away.
