Drill pattern / ball recommendations
« on: November 02, 2004, 06:53:43 AM »

Looking for a ball / drilling combination to beat a long oil pattern.  Pattern seems to be THS-shaped so the outsides do allow an aggressive ball with surface to roll straight up 5-7 board.  Problem is that corner pins are killing me...the ball has no tuck or action at the pocket to kick the corner out.

Transitioning to a stroker style, 16lbs, 350-400 revs, currently the PAP is 5 1/4" right and 3/4" up.  Most success with a V2 Strong with dull surface, pin in drilling (by 'success' I mean the ball can get to the pocket from outside, but forget carry.)

Hoping to find ball / drilling I can throw 12 to 7 that will actually carry.  May not be possible, but I know there's a lot of cranial firepower in this forum.

seems then that i would be looking for a pearl or polished ball.  those are breaking thru the break point.  had some luck with a cherry bomb a couple weeks ago when the lanes appeared a little dry, but too wet since.

I would try a Super Carbide Bomb. This ball loves oil and carries great. A 4 1/2 x 3 1/2 should work perfect for you. Pin just under the ring finger.

If the ball seems to be hooking early, then just polish it up a bit. You'll be amazed with the power and hook of this ball. =:^D

any ball that is meant for medium heavy oil will work on what you are describing. just put the pin under the ring finger and swing the cg out with the mb on the val. this will work great. i have a few drilled like this for those conditions and the pins explode.

If you're leaving a lot of corner pins and the lanes are dry outside, I wonder if the surface of the V2 STrong isn't too strong, too dull, too rough for the condition. You make it sound like it's getting to the pocket with nothing onthe ball. If I were you, before buying a new ball, experiment with the surface of your V2. Put a little polish, not a gloss shine, just a slight shine on it. Maybe use a bowling ball polish by hand, not with a spinner. Then bowl; check out the reaction. If needs be, then add a little bit more polish.
Maybe this will help it retain energy a little more, for a little more punch.

Have this problem in both my leagues in my house. Like to throw the oracle down 7 board but seems to leave lots of 10's, when i make a small adjustment seem to not be able to mix the 7 pin.  Bought a Hammer Big Blue Pearl and all my problems seem to have gone away.  Still leaves the odd 10 pin but carries the rack much better generally.

I second charlest's suggestion.
You may also sand your V2 Strong down to 320-400grit and put some polish on it. Say 600-800grit range. This helps the ball to retain more energy without sacrificing the midlane.
