odd teams in league
« on: November 15, 2010, 03:34:32 AM »
is there some kind of rule that prevents a league from having an odd amount? like having one team bowl a dummy score every week or something like that.
reason i ask is because i tried to join a league that was advertised at the alley and now they tell us at the captains meeting they have no room. their reason was because of the odd amount of teams. kinda feels like these guys are discriminating against our team by doing this.

Nothing wrong with having an odd number of teams.  But obviously you would try to avoid it, even though every team should face the "blind" team the same number of weeks if the team number was odd from the very beginning.  But once a league is established, why would you want to add an odd team?  It would be impossible to even out the schedule, let alone having to re-vote on the prize fund since new money would be added.  Now teams would have some idea where they might finish a quarter or half and that would obviously influence what type of prize fund they voted for.  Plus this far in, what your team's record be?  Would you really start a league at 0-60???  If a few teams are added in the first few weeks, they can all post bowl each other to make up the games.

the league hasn't started yet. its kind of irritating because we actually committed before one of the other teams, but their rationale is that we aren't a returning team. all of my guys are new to bowling league. a bunch of us bowled yaba together and just recently decided to find a league.
my biggest problem is that we all live/work near the alley and it would be impossible for us to go to another house.

We had a team drop so we ended up with an odd number of teams. Instead of having a bling score to bowl against,we voted that the so called bye team deaw a number of one of the other teams bowling and they were to bowl against their scores. It works,it is luck of the draw.

We've had an odd number of teams on our league a few times....happens every couple of years. Usually that team just bowls on the end lanes by themselves and have to get within 90% of team average each game to get the win. We have a couple teams lose a few games to the blind every year so at least we know it's keeping people honest....

In the German league system this frequently happens in the lowest league division. Normally, the groups consist of 6 teams and each will make one single game against each other on a league day. In some cases, the team numbers don't fit, and 5 teams will start, each with a blind game.
While thsi yields an automatic win for each team, pins are also counted, so that there is a motivation to score high, since in a draw situation the team with the higher wood count to date will get the better rank - which can be very decisive for next year's division. If possible, this situation is avoided, though.

Many league prefer an even number because it sucks showing up to bowl a blind team.

That being said, it is usually because of a team quitting during the season. If at the start of the season someone wants to join, I say let them. It is more money in the prize fund.

yeah, more money the better right?
the reationale is that because one team is bowling a blind, they will have an advantage with the jackpots. they also stated that they didn't wanna recalculate the prize money. i guess in the few days before it starts, that'd be too much effort. stuff like this is probably why membership numbers are down, 3 of the 5 on our team would've been new members.

Funny thing there is, my Thursday night team, that's our "get out early" night.  I think it's nice to have one every once in a while.  BUT, with 21 teams it's not so bad.

This is a perfect example of why leagues lose members and can't get new people in. They are so stuck in their way of doing things (sometimes breaking USBC rules) that they refuse to change.
