Drilling Costs across the Country
« on: January 19, 2011, 08:58:46 AM »
Just wondering what different parts of the country pay for drilling, grips, inserts, etc... at the local pro shops.

(Undrilled ball brought in by customer, not a plug and drill job)

Cleveland area:

Drilling=$35 - $45 w/grips

Not trying to start any controversy, just curious.

we charge $40 + grips and slug looking around $65    others around us charge $60 for reg ball $40 for platic no grips.

It dosent pay to bring a ball in your better off buying it from the proshop and getting a warrenty

Local shop charges $50-70 not including anything.

Manufactures warranty their product for one year of purchase from any online retailer. Been there and done it. Most shop employees charge less when the owner is away.

Be good, or be good at it.

…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

 When I was in business.

$50 - Blank
$15 - Slug
$10 - Inserts

$75 - total

If your a multiple blank buyer, and you honestly do business with only me than you get a reduced rate.

Drill bit .. be prepared to get blasted .. don't know what they will find wrong but your prices seem reasonable so you can't be doing things right!! Good luck!

Around my area (western minneapolis suburbs) it ranges from $40-$90 for a blank.  The shop I go to now with the Vise IT installed and inserts it's $65.  He's treated me well with my "internet" finds (I purchase from people here on BR and over at BBE, never the e-tailers), but next time I buy a ball I will buy it directly from him.

It's been a while since I've used a local shop, but I believe they are now around $60 for blank, $7 for grips, and $10 for slug - or $15 for both.  It may actually be closer to $70-75 for a blank drill.

For some reason drilling a plastic ball is only $40.   I drill my own stuff and honestly I haven't noticed a difference between the time to layout and drill a resin ball versus a plastic ball.....but that's just me.

We have two shops in town (Stockton, CA). I use the Vise IT and finger grips. One shop charges $50 the other charges $80.

Qstick, One of the reasons I believe that most pro shops charge less for a plastic ball as opposed to a reactive is they may feel that the plastic ball drilling takes less time... in many cases, it may be just a conventional grip with no inserts...Also some pro shops factor in the cost of he ball...The reason??? If something happens to the ball that they are drilling, which may be their fault, it cost more to replace a high end model then plastic..

Around here I would say the drilling cost range from $50-$60...

You know, I see this a lot.  I'm not knocking how a person runs their business - I get that with your own company you may not always want to report all of your income, but maybe it leads to some of these problems that shops come here and complain about.  You know, "how can I make money when the on-line guys are selling cheaper.  I can't make any money on the ball.....and I have all this overhead."

You have a price posted, but then start cutting people deals.  If you're going to do that, why not just have something like a loyalty card?  Give a discount on every 5th drill, or 10th drill is free or something.  That way it's fair and consistent for everybody.

You start cutting Bob a break and then he tells some other guys that Steve only charges him $40 for a drill, even though the sign says $50.  Those guys come in and might get upset that they are getting charged the same, or start asking for the "Bob discount."

Heck, I've had my pro shop guy (and my plumber....and my HVAC guy, and several other people in the "service" industry) tell me that some sales don't even go in the register.  Come in with a blank and want to pay cash and you might get a $10 discount....and you just paid for his dinner or gas in the car.

We got a new HVAC system a few years ago.  The guy came out 4 or 5 times for various problems - some just training us on how to use it, or troubleshoot some issues - and never charged us.  Last time he came out I had a check, made payable to his company (he rearranged his schedule and came out on short notice, so I considered it like an emergency call).  Looked like it was going to be a freebie until I grabbed the checkbook and asked how much it was going to be.  He looked a little surprised, and then said "oh, if you make it to the company it's $65, or just make it out to me for $50 and I don't have to do any paperwork."

I'm all for discounts and hook ups, but as a customer I also like to know what I'm working with.  I don't usually carry much cash, but if you're going to charge me $10 less I'll make a trip to the ATM before coming to your store!
