Drilling Costs across the Country
« on: January 19, 2011, 08:58:46 AM »
Just wondering what different parts of the country pay for drilling, grips, inserts, etc... at the local pro shops.

(Undrilled ball brought in by customer, not a plug and drill job)

Cleveland area:

Drilling=$35 - $45 w/grips

Not trying to start any controversy, just curious.

All sales go into the register, and I did not publicize any discounts to people.   If you were a discounted customer I knew who you are and you were a friend of mine.  If you buy on line, I do not care as long as I am drilling it.  Don't take one to Fred, another to Barney and your third to me.  If you bring me all your internet balls, over time I know your a loyal customer and I will not charge you as much.

If you bowl with me, travel with me bowling or a friend of mine than more often than not I wouldn't even charge you or just the basic $25 for slugs/inserts.

Its different when your in a small town, or a small town shop.   In a larger area with more customers there would not be as much price "adjustments".   When your in a small town, you have 3 to 5 people that are good customers, and close friends.

The guy I use normally charges

$45 for blank drill on performance ball,

$10 for thumb slug

$5 for grips

for total of $60

Last blank he drilled for me he did it for $50 w/ grips and slug.

Plastic ball he charges $45 w/ grips and slug.

Last new ball I bought from him was an Ebonite HardBall, price w/ grips and slug came to $150, and he also put new grips in one of my old balls because my fingers were tight in them when he checked my fitting.  No charge for that.

I thought Obama had put a stop to any new drilling in this country?  Oops, wrong forum!

Last time I had one drilled that wasn't bought at my pro shop, I think it cost me about $50 drill + thumb slug + tax.  Don't think that price has gone up any since then.

My driller's posted price is $50, but he gives a discount since I have him drill usually a couple of balls a year.

I've dealt with 3 different shops and one private guy, I'll list them from best to last in quality of drilling.

Shop 1: $80 with grips/slug if bought online
Private guy: $50 with grips/slug
Shop 2: $40 with grips/slug
Shop 3: $65 with grips/slug

All of my listed prices include grips -- I make $40-50 on each ball--thumb slug is $10 extra

Balls purchased elsewhere--$45--$5 grips--$10 thumb slug

I also run a referral/multiple ball discount

--return customers get $10 off all listed prices

--new customers that bring in one of my business cards with a referral earn a $10 credit for the person that referred them

$60 + tax for whatever it takes.  $30 + tax for plastic balls, but a slug and grips, if requested are $25 extra.  $20 for a plastic ball drilled for one of our youth league bowlers.  --  JohnP

I don't know what shop you go to in the Cleveland area, but if your looking for the best bang for your buck Infinite Vision is by far your best choice!!! Our price to drill a conventional drilling is $25 and tax and a fingertip drilling is $50 and tax grips and slugs included,(turbo switch grips, vise it and thumb molds additional $30)but here is where the real value comes in!!! We do what we call a release analysis(document your pap, ball speed, axis rotation, and axis tilt),as this does take an extra 15-20mins of time,it is well worth it if you as a bowler is looking to maximize your ball reaction!!! Check out our website or give us a call and we try our best to help you!!!

Conventional Grip $40

Fingertip $50

Finger grips $4 each

Slug is $8

Vise Ball IT is $11

Vise Thumb IT is $15

As soon as I get more ink for my printer, I'm going to undrilled pricing and Fingertip will be $60.  Gotta change a bunch of crazy 8's.

I've had the pleasure of going to the busiest and best pro shop in the Metro Kansas City area for over 15 years and here's what he charges:

Drilling on ball purchased here:   no charge
Drilling on ball purchased elsewhere:  $35
Grips(pair )  $6
Thumb insert  $10

I personally think he's not charging enough but that's his business.

We charge $30 to drill plastic. $50 for reactive. $10 for a set of grips. $15 for a thumb slug.

I am usually pretty flexible with return customers, league bowlers, and kids/H.S. bowlers.

In HI its about $40, ive seen some charge $60 for outside balls. The grips are additional $10 fingers, $10 thumb.

Glad our labor rates are the same, ball prices are a lot higher.
