New League Woes
« on: November 01, 2011, 01:13:45 AM »
I'm bowling in a new league (2nd shift) in a new house this fall. So far, my average is 15 pins below what I ended with last year. I just can't seem to put 3 solid games together. But it's something different every week. One week I'll bowl two decent games, and one REALLY bad game (and no, it's not always the second game that's bad). Another week I'll struggle to break average all night. Some days I can strike a bunch and my spare shooting is crap; other days my spare shooting is flawless, but I can't find the pocket. And it always feels like I leave pocket 8's and pocket 8-10's at the most inopportune times.

I'm really frustrated with how I've started this season, but I'm still confident in my overall ability. How do you guys deal with woes like this, where it's something different every week?

The law of averages are now in your favor. Just keep bowling. Throw I good and the results will balance out in the end.

Those that can do. Those that can't complain. Pimpin ain't easy, but it's mandatory.

Most things we like, we don't need. Most things we need, we don't like. Don't confuse your likes with your needs.

Sounds like a focus and repeating shots issue....

I was going to say the same thing. I suspect there is an issue with the consistency of your release and or ball speed.

Probably. It doesn't help that I didn't bowl much over the summer, either. Still, I didn't expect to start a new season THIS badly.

I ran into the same thing with my leagues.  I did bowl this summer and I did bowl in a  sport league.

The oiling pattern has changed.  Not necessarily by choice, but I noticed the League pattern was much flatter.  If you missed right, it stayed right.  If you missed left, it hooked into the nose (no hold).  The last couple of weeks, the have increased the volume of oil and decreased the outside.  Now to get the same shot, I am about 3 boards to the right.  The other commenters were probably right about the lack of summer bowling, so practice your shot consistency and your scores will increase.  Don't get uptight about the lower scores right now, just enjoy the additional handicap.

Remember, the more you practice, the luckier you will get.

Watch the better bowlers in the league to see what line they're playing and compare it to yours.  A board or two can make a difference.  --  JohnP

I agree with JohnP.  You need to see how the more successful bowlers are attacking the condition to see if you should try something different.  And this includes the type of equipment they are throwing.  If it is a second shift, and anything like our shot is after league, the heads could be a little burned by the first shift.  With the number of Nanos and Taboos being thrown at our center, you have no head oil left after 2 games, let alone 3.

Approach your next night in a different way to see if the change is beneficial at all.  Try something pearl to get through the heads.  Perhaps try a new line that is not normally thrown, whether it be inside or outside of the track area.  8s and 8-10s, for me, are typical of weak hits associated with equipment burning up, especially for second shift leagues.

It could be worse.

I fell back on 4/4/11, causing a compound fracture of my upper arm bone and elbow on my bowling arm. I had to undergo a surgical procedure called O.R.I.F. ( Open Reduction Internal Fixation. You can google it, but basically, I now have a hardware store in my elbow.), and just got back into a normal life back on 10/2/11.

The lowest average I've had in a LONG time, probably 15 years, was 205.

I am currently sitting at 169.

Everything about the game is different and hard now. My ball roll has changed, as has my ability to get under the ball and rotate it off my hand.

Count your blessings, work the kinks out, and just be glad you can bowl and be able to work things out. I just shot my highest series of the year (a measley 587), but things are looking up and can only go up from here.

 Good luck.

.

You can't completely fix the carry you can do small adjustments to help but you can't make it better it will comeback eventually. Spare shooting though is on you make your spares grind out games sometimes you have to do that kind of stuff especially on a 2nd shift league the condition will be slightly different each week due to having different bowlers breaking lanes down in front of you each week.

Overall dont expect to knock the lights out of them every time you pick up the ball.

There will be days like that and other days you shoot lights out. Like Juggernaut I hope I got it right that a injury can also affect your bowling once you are heal. Take advice from those who post I agree with it.

I hate ten pins but love the game of bowling with just the right ball to take them out.
