How important is the slide?
« on: November 25, 2003, 12:02:14 AM »
I tried doing a search, but really couldn't find anything.  I don't really slide when I bowl -- it's mostly a plant and throw kind of motion.  Is this something I should be looking to change?  Is the slide there to help with timing?  I notice that my left thigh gets pretty sore after league and didn't know if more of a sliding motion might alleviate some of the stress on my leg.

I only have a 2-4" slide. I'm not old but I'm not young either (41). I do knee bends with light dumbbells to keep my knees and thighs strengthened for my style. It is, after all, a physical sport. Why should anyone think that conditioning of some sort isn't necessary to maintain performance?

The important thing about slide/no slide is consistency.
I wear SST Vs, which give me the interchangeable sole - helps on synthetic approaches, that can be so tacky.
I don't have either a huge kneebend or slide - but it MUST be consistent for me to be consistent.

My "home" house resurfaced last year, and I find that if I slide too close to the row of nails about 15" behind the approach, I stick every time. Not good.
BUT - I expect it now, and can deal with it. But my upper left thigh is tight when I'm done bowling in that house.

I've started working out as I'm now in 2 leagues, sort of -- a short one with my son and part-time in another -- and I want to be ready for golf season.  I know my recovery time is getting much shorter for both my arm and my leg after I bowl.  When I do slide, I feel like I'm on ice skates and I don't skate well at all!!

Here are two ends of the spectrum Nollster.  If you watch the PBA or have watched it over the years.  Marshall Holman very long slide and fluid arm swing.  Micheal Haugen plants and throws but not the atypical rip the cover off the ball cranker.  Usually loves to play the twig or a down and in shot in the track area.  These two are 180 degrees from each other.
