Drinking and bowling
« on: November 26, 2003, 08:36:03 AM »
I was just sitting here wondering how many of you drink when you bowl.  We have this stereotype has overweight drunks.  I won't lie, I drink quite a bit on my Friday night mixed league.  I don't drink on my other more serious league.  It is peterson points and is the most competitive league in town.  I should be averaging 10 pins higher on Friday but I find myself enjoying myself more than bowling well.  I can throw a good game if we need to win a game, but otherwise I just have fun.  I am not sandbagging I am still over deuce at 205 but I am higher on Tuesday and the shot is tougher.

So do you drink and does it affect your bowling??  I relax if I have one or two but anymore than that I lack the necessary concentration to score consistently.  Thoughts??

I usually drink a few beers while bowling league. Since the leagues I bowl in are 5-man teams, there's alot of time between frames to kill, so drinking beer is only natural. Of course on my Fri night league, I do have a few more than on Mon night. For tourney's, I usually don't drink - or I cut back, depends on the time and place. But if someone's buying, I NEVER refuse!

Oh ya - I'm not overweight and I'm not a drunk.

Mostly water but will have a few after.  Have to patronize the place you bowl after all.

When I ran a center, I hated the water drinkers.

I've found that it really doesn't make that much difference...however, the 2 or 3 is probably  best, ....just enough to relax you.....meaning, 1 per game, maybe even less.......

i bowled the second highest series of my life (846) so drunk, the last game, i saw 14 arrows. Had a couple of my 19 300 games like that to. Now, i'm just an occasional drinker, maybe a beer or 2 while i bowl, but usually diet pepsi.

in response to bones post. Sometimes overthinking is bad. for me i tend to press too much when i bowl, and if i have a beer it loosens me up and keeps me so i don't overanalyze or start thinking myself out of shots. I'm not stupid and keep drinking until i can't see, and i rarely if ever drink. But when i do this is the result i get. I tend to think too much about carry down or this or that or what i did wrong on the last shot and how i got away with it. When i put a beer down i relax and just make shots and my natural game comes out more and i tend to bowl better.

just my experience with it.

I'm a water drinker till I'm done bowling (sorry Scotts)

I'll have a Blue Light while I'm waiting for the rest of the league to finish so they can turn in their recaps.

Only once (many, many years ago) have I ever consumed an alcoholic beverage while bowling. It was a single beer.

Now - way back when, I had absolutely no reservations about maximum consumption AFTER the match.

Now, I just don't drink much. We're coming into my heavy drinking season - a couple of whiskey laced egg nogs per holiday season is just about my limit.

However, I LOVE bowling against the drinking teams. Especially in the scratch leagues. We have one guy in the league that NOBODY likes - and by the end of the night he might have consumed 8-10 beers. He sometimes starts out well, but NEVER finishes with a decent game.

I usually enjoy a beer a game, just to keep the aiming fluid at the right level.  I get out of the house and enjoy bowling and beer and find that it doesn't effect me one bit on the lanes, three beers a game might.  Bowling is not serious enough that I would rather not have a few then to have a couple.  But I don't drink much for the reason of driving home, not for bowling, and I carry a decent average and have shot some Honor scores while having a couple in me.

I'll have 2 or 3 during a league session.  For some reason I tend to get all stressed out in a tight game and a couple of beers seems to help out. I know alcohol has negative impact on the physical aspect of the game. But, for me, this seems to be more than offset by being more relaxed etc...  After all, the beer must not hurt me too much -- my game 2 and game 3 averages are both about 15 pins higher than my game 1 average

Since the house won't add Tito's to the selection of Vodka, it is Dr. Pepper for me...I can't really even remember the last time I was consuming alcohol while bowling.
