Bowling Balls for Crankers
« on: February 28, 2012, 01:55:51 AM »
Hi All! I'm a 18mph, 475-500 rev player, and I'm curious to know what bowling balls work best for players like me. They can be old or new balls, I don't care. I toss a Hot Sauce and a Motiv Raptor P7 now. Thanks for your help!

All you need is two:

Hammer Taboo
Hammer Hot Sauce
In the bag:

Roto Grip Magic Gem
Motiv Primal Shock
Hammer Ocean Vibe

FYI, you're going to get flamed by some of the posters on here that think you have to know every one of your specs and every minute detail before asking for advice.

I'm only going to say that something with a higher grit surface or even have polish seems the best fit. 2000 grit and above is what I have seen work best with the speed and rev rate you mentioned.

Asking for what balls work best for crankers is a little vague.  If you are having issues with your current equipment or are anticipating bowling on sport shots, then you may get better responses.

The equipment you have is pretty strong so I am guessing you are looking for something a little weaker.

I have similar stats and I like even rolling equipment with some surface.  Something like a Hyroad or the new Crossroad.  I also have a Prodigy that I like a lot.

For weaker I have a Motiv QZ2 that has been great at 4000 and the Brunswick Avalanche Urethane also at 4000.

I like Storm and my next purchase after a Crossroad may be something like a 2Furious.  Something solid with surface and not too aggressive.

But as lifted rillo said, you may need to give more information.  If not your release information, at least something about what the balls would be for.

Also, what type of conditions are you wanting the equipment for.

Recently I determined that I need to build a tournament arsenal that was different from my league equipment.  My home house tends to put out a drier shot with limited head oil versus what I am starting to experience in tournaments.  So I would struggle at tournaments with what I had set up for league.

My recommendation is to have a medium ball drilled pin up that can get through choppy or drier heads with some recovery, along with a stronger ball, drilled pin down designed to pick up a earlier read for times when you encounter heavier oil.  Beyond that initial recommendation, you can choose from many balls from many brands and many surface variations.  There are too many unknown factors in my opinion to offer more detailed advice.

I'd look into something with a lower RG differential. A Solaris Blackout could be a very versatile piece for you (esp. due to its low RG core - good length combined with quick back end response), and I have seen crankers tyring/using Motifs RX-1's (both the orange and the silver ball) with pleasant success on shorter patterns and later games. Both balls could IMO be a good combo. For something "above", both (retired) Twisted Furies from Brunswick (pearl and solid version) could be an option. The Ogres from Visionary also offer a wide array of options, from urethane for toast lanes up to old-school particle for long and heavy oil.

I don't understand your question, your signature answers it for you.  "All you need is two, Hammer Taboo and Hammer Hot Sauce".  C'mon.  Really?

Don't believe in the Uzi, it just went off in my hand.  I, I believe in love.

maybe I've been considering the wrong type of cores, why would a cranker want a low r.g. core?

The harder I try the harder they fall

Why wouldn't they????

Rash absolutely stuck his d in the rest of the tour's a in the WSOB using a Nexus Solid and Pearl.  Tommy Jones throws a Gamebreaker quite a bit of the time.

I'm not sure why Low RG cores are a bad idea?

Low RG cores are absolutely a good thing for crankers as it helps the ball get into the roll sooner rather than delaying the breakpoint.

Exactly - you just have to take look at the complete ball package, including the RG differential, the coverstock material, the surface prep as well as the layout. The statement "crankers should use low RG balls" is utterly wrong and would be a total misconception. But, e. g., in the case of the Blackout, it blands so well into the ball's overall design, that it makes IMHO sense for a cranker as a go-to ball on almost anything but extreme conditions. The low differential makes for a smooth breakpoint transition and helps storing energy for the back end area. The low RG helps with PSA transition and responsiveness - good for higher ball speeds. The relatively mild cover prevents jerky reactions at the wet/dry fringes, and with OOB polish you get very good length though the heads even on lighter conditions. A ball in a player's hands is always a compromise of some sort, but you can puzzel together some factors which help optimizing the result. ;)
