Drunk every week........

I got a question for all you bowlers. I just got back into the game 3 years ago after being out for 12. I had a chance to be on a team this year with guys I have never met.

This guy shows up the first week late and DRUNK. I have put up with his stuff for 29 weeks. He comes DRUNK every week and says he is there for the fun of bowling. He is 34 and I am soon to be 55. His average is 138, mine is in this house 203.

Would you bowl with this guy next year. I am going to print out this for him to read after any responses. Oh, by the way, he has pissed off about 6 guys in the league that want him to step outside.

Many people disagree, but I say drinking only mixes well with one other thing. DRINKING. Nothing else. If you try to drink and do anything else but drink, you can, in too many cases end up with a very poor result.
Regardless of WHY, if someone on  my team pissed me off bad enough, I wouldn't bowl with them anymore. It ruins it for me. Just my two cents.

i wouldn't. because im at the bowling ally almost everyday and when the league comes in all of them stat drinking.i get into a fight with lady at the snack bar. then i just leave.

No, I would NOT bowl with him again.  I would rather find another team in need of a serious, higher average bowler or set out even than have to put up with the frustration of this guy.

 If the other members of the team are also of a like mind, then have the team captain replace him with someone else, then he can "DISCO BOWL" on friday's and saturday's with the rest of the drunks.

 I have been in your shoes before and it is no fun. What good is it if you are not able to enjoy it for yourself?  He definitely does what he enjoys, whether you like it or not, so you can be the same way where he is concerned.

I'd find a new team.  Regardless of whether you are bowling super competive scratch league or the no pressure mixed league, it's supposed to be fun.  And you can't have fun with this guy.  I don't like bowling with drinkers either.  Have maybe one beer per game is fine, but when people want to drink first, then bowl, I don't enjoy it.  I'll go and get my drink on AFTER bowling, but during league I prefer to bowl.

I think it depends on both the league and your comfort level.
If you don't like bowling with a drunk, don't bowl with a drunk. If he embarrasses you and your teammates, you shouldn't ask him back.
If you don't think he's being serious enough and it's a casual league, then you should probably seek out another league or team. Fun leagues are fun leagues and I don't expect anyone to be overly serious in them, even the better bowlers.

I don't mind people if they feel the need to have a drink or two while bowling if it helps them get loose. I would have a big problem with someone who shows up every week to bowling lit up, that can effect the team morale and then seep into your performance.

I guess I wouldn't bowl with this person and would try to put in a replacement that would fit the team's goals and chemistry better. If you are serious about bowling well, all parts of the team are important.

The team my wife and I are on is made up of three couples, we rotate weeks. The other two guys drink, sometimes a lot, but they KNOW..when to slow down, stop whatever. They drink a few beers, as does my wife, just to relax and make it fun. Nothing overboard, nothing to embarrass anyone. I don't drink, but that's my choice ( and I'm driving).
I would not stay on a team that has a drunk or a late drunk on it. I'd move teams or ask the others if they want him to be removed.

Shipper, is the guys name Doug?  I think I bowl with him.  I've bowled with this guy for about 10 years now.  Every year he shows up later and more drunk, though he may have got a message this year - about 8 weeks ago he started coming in more sober, though still late.  I'm not bowling with him next year if I can find any other option.  (though there are also other factors involved in my seeking a new team.)

Shipper, I think what you need to realize is that you and your teammate need different things from the game.  You are obviously craving good competition and a more serious environment, and your teammate is merely looking to blow off a little steam and have some fun. I think it would be best if the two of you could realize you have different expectations/needs from the game, and went your separate ways to find teams with others who share your views.  I think both of you would enjoy the game more. Hope it works out.

I would probably just flat out tell him that if he does not drink less that you will not bowl with that team next year. I understand wanting to have fun, but if it ends up upsetting your own team then you know there is a problem.

If YOU'RE not having fun, then you need to find another team/league.  Bottom line.  End of story.  League bowling is something to look forward to with pleasure, not dread.

Thanks for all the responses. I only have 2 weeks left with this guy and will never bowl with him again. I just wanted opinions to show him if he gets smart with me at the banquet.

From reading here, I guess the night we had 9 pitchers of beer for 5 guys for 3 games would be just a bit too much?

Its all I can do not to dance with him at the end of the night when all the drinking he has done that makes him a BIG man.

Thanks again to all the ole time bowlers and the young ones out there.

I've been known to have a few while a bowl, but I'm never late, and I don't cost my team games.  That's where I draw the line.  If the drinking and tardiness costs me games (money) I would be telling the person to find another team.
