dry lane ball
« on: May 07, 2008, 05:02:15 PM »
I know this has probably been disscussed a million times  but would it be better to use a stronger ball drilled weakly or a weaker ball drilled stronger?
             thanks

I can honestly say I've never done either, I tend to drill my weaker stuff on the weaker-ish side.  But my Neptune with a like, 5.5 or 6 inch pin to PAP distance is golden on dry lanes.

do you have a problem getting the ball through the heads when they are dry? or do you have a problem with over-reaction when the ball reaches the break point?

i ask this because if you are having a over-reaction down lane you want to look for something smoother....and if you are having to play too much angle in the heads, you'll need to find something cleaner....my dry lane balls are a columbia 300 power torq (drilled 6x3 with a flare reducing weight hole, gray scotch brite and polished) and a columbia 300 pro hook (pin in palm gray scotch brite and polished)....

i usually dont have a problem with the heads as long as i dont try to use to much ball  mainly i was looking for something to smooth out the backend hook when lanes start to break down during tournaments

I use a polished, weakly drilled Ebonite Bash, and it does the trick unless they get dry enough to the point where even something like an XXXL would be too strong.

I use a weak ball, Storm hot rod hybrid, drilled semi-weak. High peformance balls tend to have a core that is too strong for dry lanes.

i had thought maybe a jazz, dead flush,or maybe a urethane ball might be right but i have never seen either of the first 2 used so i dont know if they would be to strong for what i want or not

I prefer to go with a weak ball with a stronger drilling. This way if it hits dry early it doesn't over react.

The concerns with a strong ball drilled weakly are just how much ball speed do you have and how dry are the lanes.

A weak drill can only make a strong ball just so weak. Even with the pin in the track or on your PAP (the weakest drillings), the coverstock rules the reaction equation. There reaches a point where the ball just won't clear the heads. What that point is for that ball and your delivery, only you can tell when you're bowling and that may be too late.

There are many excellent weak resin and urethane balls for dry lanes. Some are current, some are still available, some are on Ebay.

My ball speed averages around 19.5-20 mph and probably 350-400 revs  most of the time i just try to use more speed but lately in tournaments i have been finding lanes i cant speed up enough for. Right now i use a momentum levrg nvs and a trauma or fury depending on what lane conditions i think i will see
