Dry Lane Ball

I am in the market for a new dry lane ball. I am thinking of getting either a 900 Global Link, Hammer Emerald Green Vibe, or a Roto Grip Neptune.  Does anyone know how these balls compare?

I'm a stroker without a lot of hand and my Neptune can jump pretty hard when it hits the dry.  Wish I could give you a comparison with the Link and/or Emerald Vibe...just thought you might like to know that the Neptune coasts through the fronts and mids, but might be a little strong for totally toasty lanes.

Depends on the posiiton of the pin in relation to the PAP.
I've seen 5" and longer pins handle "dry" just fine.
Of course, there's dry and then there's "DRY"!
Some "DRY" you need plastic or at best a pealized urethane.
For some dry-ish, a mild pearl resin like the Neptune, Avalanche Slide, AMF Orbit Extreme pearl are just fine.

The Emerald Vibe is not for dry.
If you'd like an EBonite made ball, try a Tornado or Scout. Both are pancake cores or modified pancake cores.

That's an excellent point Charlest!  The league I bowl in is a very competitive high pot league (5 bowlers mixed).  The first game starts with light oil but because so many bowlers throwing at the same line, my strike line is usually gone by the second game if not before.  I need a speciality ball in my bag that I can throw down and in on a light to dry lane condition that will still carry on the back end.

I bought the Neptune as a Dry lane ball.  It definatly is not a dry lane ball.  The thing is a monster on the back end.  I ended up buying an Avalanch Pearl for doing exactly what you are looking for.  I send it straight down 5 and watch it just drift into the hole.  It carry's very well.  I have not used it a lot and have only had it about 6 weeks. but I have shot a 279, 259, 236 with it so far.  For a mid priced ball the Avalanch line is very good.

I have a Neptune with 4000 Abralon finish on it instead of polish, and it can handle the dry stuff pretty well.  Sometimes it gets jumpy in the back, but with a nice control drilling and the surface finish, I find it to be great.

The Hammer Razyr would be the current Hammer ball for dry: reactive cover with simple pancake core.

Drilled my Neptune with a seven (7) inch pin-to-pap and it serves well on dry lanes - easy length, smooth change in direction. It's not as good as the old V2 Dry or Dyno-Thane Barrage, from a control stand point. If the mid lanes are fried and the heads start to go, nothing beats plastic.

If you aren't going to go with the XXXL, which is amazing btw, then the new Avalanche Slide might be a good choice.

Pretty much what Charlest said.

Out of the three balls you listed, I would be more tempted to go with the Link.

The Neptune has a smooth move in the fronts and mids, but has a lot of backend, an will get jumpy on you. Don't even consider the Emerald Green Vibe!

I have the Emerald Vibe. Definetely not for dry lanes. Same coverstock at the Doom I believe. I use the Avalanche Slide for Dryer conditions and it works very well. Very smooth move for a pearl. Not jumpy at all. But as everyone has said plastic is always old faithfull if they are totally burnt.

THANKS FOR ALL THE ADVICE GUYS.

That's why I love this site....So many knowledgeable bowlers, always willing to help out a fellow member.

I've made so many bad ball decisions in the past, I can't afford to get this one wrong (4 kids and a bad economy).

You guys have definitely swayed me toward the Avalanche Slide, I hadn't thought of that ball.

Drrev, I do like your advice about the 900G C.P.,  I agree that the Sahara is a bad ball for dry lanes, the core is just way too strong...I don't want to make that mistake again. From what you're saying the Link might suffer the same problem.

....It's funny that you guys mention plastic, because some nights i do end up throwing my spare ball for strikes...I leave alot of 10 pins though.

The Emerald Vibe features the same cover as the Toxic. However, it is more for medium oil than light oil. If you want to use Hammer, go with a Razyr. I can't comment on the others because I haven't thrown them, but I've heard nothing but good things about the Avalanche Slide.

Take a look at the Visionary Slate blue Gargoyle.  You have to call visionary and see if they have any left.  $ 85 bucks shipped.  
drilled 6 inch pin to pap .. pin above middle finger.
I have mine super polished and delay reaction on it and I use it for 10 pins and super dry.. It won't move much unless I have super dry.. you can leave it out of the box and it will be good for dry.. or just polish it up with super high grit for somewhere in between.
It is a polished urethane ball with a super core.. great looking ball too..
I would say in the condition I have it in it is just above a plastic cover..won't move in oil but will move alittle more than plasic on dry..
cover is super hard and core won't stop though.. it does not leave pins..

I also have the neptune drilled 5 1/2 pin to pap and the ball is a dart through the heads.  It does have a poppy backend though.  I think you could tame it with some delay reaction of high polish.. Super core also though.
