Any preferences between buying a new ball designed for dry lanes, versus using older equipment that isn't as strong compared to today's balls?

I've generally found better success with old equipment versus some of the new balls being advertised as being "weak" or for dry lanes.

Depends what your goal is on dry lanes. If your goal is to grind your way to hitting the 1-3 or play the rail on short oil then an older ball that is tracked out or a urethane is fine. For playing inside 10 on lanes that have seen some wear, I would recommend something polished that is a little weaker will push longer and retain its energy on drier lanes like a Strike King or LT48.

I just use an older resin ball. You still get flare so you can open up your angles but with the covers not being as grippy, you still get push. I have an Ebonite Cougar that's awesome on the dry. And it still hits big.

I like to take new weaker balls and drill them strong. I think the Roto-Grip Scream and Shout are the best dry lane balls you can get. I used my double thumb layout with p2 and p3 weight holes and I can basically take advantage of the friction to the outsides with the Shout and then as I move in switch to Scream to take advantage of the bump. Most nights I rarely swap balls just because I'm LH. Or I'll start with the Scream as the play a little more open.

Moreso, its just a preference.
