Anybody ever break their elbow?
« on: April 22, 2011, 01:51:50 AM »
Back on 4/4/11, I fell and broke my humerus, just above the elbow. Being an open fracture ( bone broke through the skin), it required a surgical fix.

I now have plates on the inner and outer sides of the humerus bone. The also had to break the back of the joint, called the olecranon, to allow them to properly place the ball of the humerus back into the socket, then repaired that by inserting a pin to reattach it.

I am on workers comp and in rehab now. Even with some therapy, the elbow doesn't seem to want to flex past the 90 degree position, so I am now having to do most of my daily tasks with my left hand ( I am right handed and broke my right arm).

I cant reach my head to comb my hair, or my mouth to feed myself, unless I use the left hand. Has anyone else ever gone through this and, if so, how long did it take to get your flexibility back and get back to a somewhat "normal" existence where you could work and bowl?

I have been threw 2 rehabs of various kinds, not an elbow, but a Thumb and a Broken Wrist.
It is going to take a while BUT you must do your rehab and push yourself, if you expect to get back were you were before the accident. I cant express enough about the rehab, very important.

Yea, I got that, so no problem there. It's my arm, and I'd like to have it back, so I'll be doing my therapy, even though it seems slow and can be painful.

Jug: The accident was on 4/4/11?  Come on, it's only been about 6 weeks. That's nothing in the world of healing time, especially in the area of regaining flexibility.

I was in a serious accident in late 2010, with multiple dislocations and a right shoulder humeral ball fracture. It's taken 30+ physical therapy sessions and gradually increasing weight training to regain about 80% of what I was. I couldn't do anything for myself during the first 4 weeks. But things started to get gradually better after that.

Be patient. It might take at least a year to feel somewhat normal again, but you'll get there and you will bowl again.

Yea, I know, but it feels like forever. I've never even taken more than one week off of work at a time in my life, yet its been 6 weeks since its happened, and the doctor says it will be 6 more before he will even let me go back to work on light duty, then another 90 days before he will even THINK about letting me go full duty. This sitting around and waiting is killing me.

He also says no heavy physical activity until further notice, so that means no bowling.  I already knew that, but my work and my bowling are the only things that keep me busy.

Just a hard situation for me. I've been working since I was 14, bowling since I was 21, and I'm 50 now, so this is a strange place for me. At least if I could work I'd feel like I had a little say in my own fate. As it is, I am at the mercy of others, and I don't like that much.

Iam feeling your pain.. in feb/2011 I was unloading my truck(trucker) at work when something actual popped(you could hear it pop) in my right arm elbow area(right in front of my boss).. come to find out 3 days later after going to the hospital twice.. I had partially torn the inner and outer tendons(elbow) and partial torn the tendon & muscle to my right biscep.. seen the specialist (on comp) and he says no surgery do to the fact that they are only partial tears.. he has told me if I would have torn one of the 3 totally he would have gone in and repaired all of them at the same time.. he has also said b/c they are partial tears  and the three are intertangled together it will take even longer for them to heal..  I have been going to theropy 3 times a week for 10 weeks now.. the doc says I will probably loose about 20-40% of my normal strentgh and it will not come back.. I am also a right handed person even though I did bat and play hockey lefty it is a challenge to do things.. the doc and my theropist have told me Iam in for a long long haul to try to get it even close to normal again.. (9-12months) they have also told me I will be at risk to hurting it even after it has healed.. it has been suggested I look for a new career, I told them yeah how Iam I going to do that.. I missed the last 10 weeks of bowling(its killing me).. just today I went the pro shop and had them drill me a 14#er for my left hand.. gonna try it lefty now, will probably never be as good(avg.high 220s righty)  but I gotta bowl..lol.. I am interested in how things go for you.. try to keep the post updated if you can.. I wish you the best and speedy recovery.. slashrr69

The elbow is very difficult to get the full range of motion back.  Keep working at it and have faith that

it will come back to normal.  Your fracture was very extreme and it hasn't been that long--it may take over

a year to get it back.  Good luck.
