Dulling down a pearl to use as a oiler
« on: September 11, 2011, 12:55:52 PM »
has anyone ever tried knocking the polish off a strong pearl ball and using it has a oil ball?

I am thinking of trying it with my AfterMath Pearl, drill pattern is pretty strong already (35x4x35) maybe to strong for how I like my oilers to roll .

I've dulled down some pearls in my time, and personally, they work better than solid balls dulled. Clears thefeont cleaner than a dull solid, and still has some backend. Hit it with.some 2000 abralon, and see how you like it.

See Mission, Mission $250K, Taboo Blue/Silver, C System 3.5, MoRich Mania, RG Critical Theory, Col Outburst.

All are, as far as I know, 100% pearl reactives and all are or have been marketed as balls that will handle heavier concentrations of oil.

I have sanded a few older pearl reactives to lighter grit levels from their original polished finish and many handled much higher concentrations of oil and hooked much earlier than expected. I think there is little problem doing this with many current pearls on the market, besides the ones above that come stock with surfaces like P2000 )or P4000) grit matte/dull.

I did this with a C300 Bedlam last year. Had some big matches and had a heck of season last year. I even helped my team to a second place finish for the last half of the season. The ball had a consisitent hard hitting reaction!

My Agent Orange came @ 500 abralon. I didn't care for it that way, but it sure handled the soup.

Hit it with 2000  man she is a beast.

This works great just as long as you realize it probably won't be good at handling truly soupy conditions. When you face something like the Team USA Tokyo pattern, you'll probably find you won't get enough midlane read until the shot dries up a little. But the vast majority of conditions with a little extra oil out there? It is a great option to have. More entry angle than a dull solid, but more midlane and more control than a polished ball. I've shot many good scores with sanded pearls over the past few years on both house and sport conditions.

i have been curious to this as well. I have an 718a that i wanted to try this with. I think it may help eliminate the over under reaction i get with the oob finish. just curious how a 2k polished pearl will roll compared to 4k abralon...no polish on the same ball...?

In my sport league we are currently bowling on dead mans curve:  I have seen 4 or 5 guys throwing the storm anarchy on the fresh pattern;  i know one is averaging 210+ after two weeks.  so he is sucessfull with the anarchy.

I have no knowledge of thier ball surfaces; but that guys ball appears to be OOB or just less.  it does have a sheen to it; not dull at all.

Not a high rev rate guy either, I would guess he is between 330 -350 RPMs
