Durability of original Inferno Coverstock?
« on: October 25, 2004, 07:38:47 AM »
Need opinions on this.  I am looking for a early revving low RG ball with an agressive resin coverstock.  What do you think of this ball for long life and usefulness?  Or does this ball die an untimely death?  Seems the Inferno has been around for a relatively long time so some of you should have some serious games on them by now.

Every life has an ending, eventually..

I've drilled many Infernos and haven't come across with an early death. It keeps its performance characteristics fairly long if maintained properly..
I have mine with 120 games on it right now. I have extracted oil and resufaced it after 110 games and it gained 95% of its performance back..

Please check some other threads as well;

I've probably got around 700 games on one of my original inferno's and it hasn't missed a beat. And I've only resurfaced it twice.

700 games on it and has not missed a beat!

A friend of mine has well over 1000 games on his Columbia Wicked and has never once cleaned or resurfaced the ball. It stills hooks without a problem. He averages around 215-220 with it.

DavidKSNK,

We have been through this many times in various threads..
"Effective" life of a bowling ball is 200-250 games with a proper maintenance. Note the quotations "effective"! That is a scientific fact, not only experience.
Coverstocks do ware out. Every life has an ending.

Coverstock longevity may vary due to the surface preparation of the ball, rev rate, surface of the lane and oil amount. Some coverstocks last longer, some not. But dies in the end.

The reason that many of us (including me) sometimes do not recognize this until it is too late, it dies gradually. You get used to it in time and continue to play the proper shot by tuning your line with its remaining capacity. Besides, they do not die totally, ofcourse you will see some hook.

Best way to compare that 1000games played ball is drilling new one with identical specs and playing on the same pair.  Please also remember you need to have some "serious pattern" on the lane. I don't say heavy oil or light. I say competitive pattern other than THS. (I do not suggest that one of them is better, I suggest that you need to have something other than china wall to see the true hook capacity difference).

My sport pattern average is 193. On THS, I play with my worn out Trauma Recovery (around 2000 games on it) and never scored under 215 as an average..
Scoring is somethingelse, waring out is something else. If, already worn out ball matches up with the condition and your game, you will score.

Please also take a look at this thread. It may help..
