Rudimentary coaching for Office Party?
« on: November 30, 2005, 08:26:30 AM »
We're having our holiday party at a nearby bowling alley, which I am hugely excited about.  (Half a day off work basically, free bowling and food, AND they say we can drink a little!)  I offered to give some people tips and advice if they were intimidated by bowling.  I just want to make sure people have fun and see how fun bowling can be!  Any advice for some things I should focus on?  My first thought is to get them to try to stand in a certain place (probaby just the middle dot) and try to throw it over the third arrow.  Any other thoughts?

If they've never bowled before, have them stand at the foul line, swing the ball and then throw it. Simplest is best; you never know if anyone has any athletic skills until they try.

As Charlest said, keep is simple.  things like keep your arm swing straight, don't throw it too hard, stuff like that.  If you get too technical, they won't enjoy it.

middle dot, third arrow??  Then they would have to walk to left to hit it(righty).

Middle dot, in between the 2nd and 3rd arrow, you don't have to be accurate anyway these days.

Good luck.

Well, I would tell them third arrow expecting them to miss their target right.

For my office party a couple of years ago, I gave this advice to people who had never bowled.  Stand in the middle, walk(don't run) and roll the ball over third arrow.  For spares, move left or right(opposite the side the pins are on, point feet toward pins, line up shoulder with target pin and roll the ball.
Worked pretty well for all but the most uncoordinated.

FIRST PIECE OF ADVICE - GET THEM TO FIND HOUSE BALLS THAT ARE A REASONABLY CLOSE FIT!!!

And make sure the women use weights appropriate for them. Women like to be "cute" and throw balls that are "soo pretty" - they're usually 8 pounds. Men tend to be too macho, and go for the 16 pounders with the huge holes...

Second piece of advice - no beer on the approach. I went to one of these parties a few years ago - I was the only serious bowler, and picked up my ball off the rack one shot - one of my "opponents" had POURED BEER IN THE THUMBHOLE. They couldn't understand why I threw such a temper tantrum!!!

Third - try to hit the second arrow, and make sure they end up on the appropriate foot.

That's probably about all you can accomplish in one session. GOOD LUCK!

I had a similar case in my agency... 40 people to the lanes last year. I also offered a theoretical training workshop, made up a Powerpoint presentation about basics, including some downloaded tutorial videos, which I showed and talked through with a beamer in a conference room:

- Game principles ("what the hell are we doing here!")
- Very basic lane geography
- How to select a matching ball weight
- Why a good grip is important (span & hole sizes)
- How to hold a ball (thumb forward)
- How to make a proper approach (cadence & swing)
- How to shoot a straight ball
- Lane etiquette and dangers to avoid

I also brought a ball with conventional grip with me for demonstration.

Just a few attended due to time problems (as usual...), took about 1 hour, but it seemed to be quite successful.
