Going natural
« on: August 09, 2004, 09:50:56 AM »
I was praticing tonight with a friend of mines who decided to take out his finger tips on all of his equipment and go natural.  I thought the idea was a little crazy until I praticed with his equipment.  It felt as if I was getting better control on the ball and it fit better in my hand,  I did however, feel the burn after my release(our span and finger size are slightly different).  I was just curious to know how many of you roll or have rolled without inserts and what are your thoughts on this conversion.  I'm thinking of getting something punched up without tips to experiment.

A person can use a finger grip tight or loose. With out finger grips, how tight do you run the holes so that they won't hurt your fingers?

In the "old" days, I didn't use grips, because they hadn't been invented yet. It took me a couple of weeks to develop the calluses on the fingers - and they ended up quite thick.
It hurt in the meantime, and when the calluses ripped off.
Other than that, I really like the feel of no grips. But now that I've torn the tendons in my wrist/ring finger, I'm afraid to try. I put lifter grips in the middle finger, and non lifter ones in the ring finger...

I haven't used inserts in years.  I used to hang/hit up on the ball a lot when I used them.  That wasn't horrible back then, but it would be really bad now.  All of my stuff has ovals drilled into the ball.  Once you get that done, you'll wonder how you ever used round finger holes.  Some people claim a small change in revs when they switch from or to grips, but I can't imagine it's a big enough difference to worry about.

I find this hard to believe.  All grips will wear out and have to be replaced.  On the balls I use alot, I'm replacing the grips about every 6 weeks.

In theroy you should be able to hit the ball more with no inserts and just rev tape. With inserts, not all of your energy/force/lift/hit is being transfered into the ball.

I made the switch and have a little bit of thickening of the skin just around the joint but nothing excessive, and i bowl on average 40 to 50 games per week in the off season.

The first few balls i drilled up i went tighter and then i tried a little bigger, but my fingers do swell and shrink.

If you do make the change to no inserts, it requires changes in not just your finger pitches, but also possibley in your thumb. If you maintain the same pitchings in your fingers and thumb as your old grip with inserts you might start to exit the ball too early.

I'm about 60/40 and having the rest of mine converted to NO grips....just feels better, more consistent release.....and.......you shouldn't be HITTING the ball anyhow!

Brickguy -- Tightness of the fingerholes is another "personal preference", whether grips are used or not.  I do not use grips, and prefer my finger holes fairly loose.  I drill for others that like tight finger holes.  I don't find that loose finger holes cause me to lose rotation.  You lift against the front and side of the hole, so in my opinion they don't have to be tight (flamers, try loose holes before flaming).  Jim -- How 'bout that quote!  --  JohnP

I just went from grips to no-grips a few months ago and I'm so glad that I did.  I get a much better rotation on the ball during the release and feel that I have actually gained revs as opposed to losing revs as such is the case for others.  My release is a lot more consistent than it used to be and I found myself saving money by not having to replace grips every couple months or so.  "No-grips" responds to hand positions much better and revs can be added or taken off much easier because the fingers tend to come out easier instead of getting hung up in the grips.

I prefer grips not for additional turn or lift but for feel.  I hated adding tape to finger holes but with grips no matter how big or small my hand is I can still get a good feel in the ball.

Hey ive been experimenting on my old messenger with no grips, well the 1st time i put tape in the finger holes but it the ball was just like fallign of my hand, so my driller plugged then and made the span 1/4inchlonger and that fells streched out and i still drop the ball, i havent put tape into the longer span yet though, i think the pitch in the fingers is away on the longer span.

my question is do u guys run pitch on the fingers? and do u run tape? I asked my guy to run a pitch in the figers that goes tooward the thumb but he said lets try makign the span bigger.

Thanks.
