is there a reason
« on: August 09, 2004, 08:28:40 AM »
i live in Green Bay Wisconsin and the population is like
109,000, and i walk into the pro shop today and i see a black cherry bomb for sale and im ok friends with the guy at the pro shop and we get talking and that black cherry brings up a discussion , and i asked do you know of anyone using lane 1 and he said very few like he get like about 3 people a year who orders one and his top selling ball was the triple x factor he sold like 10 last season, i say to him i wonder why that almost know one buys lane 1 because there is alot of people on ball reviews that swear by them,

so my question is for you guys that have pro shops up north like Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota do you guys sell alot of lane 1 stuff? is it just this one pro shop?

Im not saying lane 1 is bad at all if i had money right now i would go buy that cherry bomb. i hope he sells it and gets more cause thats what he said he would do

People buy what they know.  One of our proshops carried a lot of the smaller brands.  They didn't sell much at first.  When the owner shot 830 with Visionary, people started buying the Visionary, Lanemasters, Bulldog, etc. that he was carrying.  I was one of the first in my area to own a few Dynothane and Rotogrip releases.  Once a few people see the smaller manufacturers in use, they'll come around.  Maybe you can be the guy who causes a lot of Lane#1 balls to be sold in your area.

not really here in Minnesota, the two pro shops that i go to dont have them on the shelve you have to order them, I think most people dont like spending that much more on a ball when they can get something close to it for 50$ cheaper

Well, up here in the northern part of Michigan's U.P., there is exactly 1 Lane #1 ball, and I just drilled it out a few weeks ago. Our distributors don't handle Lane #1, so I told him to order one off the internet. He's very happy with it(Super Carbide Bomb) as an oil ball.
On a side note, several years back, Lane#1 called up all the pro shops in the area trying to convince us to carry their equipment. At the time, their pricing was just too high for this area, so we declined their offer. At the time, we had a hard time selling anything above 200$. Since then it's gotten to be an easier sell on the high-performance stuff. Maybe I'll call Lane#1 up and see about carrying their stuff for the coming season.

im just a kid know one cares what i use but if some 230 avg guy had a lane 1 arsenal im sure that would help get lane 1 in the pro shop, i mean if the owner would just order a couple lane 1 balls im sure people would buy them and down the road it could be new thing around here. seeing as much as alot of you guys swear by them. some day i will own a lane 1 ball though

I've gotten all my lane #1 stuff either from fellow BR members used, and a new one from ebay.

Most proshops are not going to carry lane #1 in stock.

Our distributor doesn’t sell them; I believe the only way you can get them is to deal with direct with the manufacture. Since you get volume discounts from your distributor buying lane #1 hurts that volume and can drive all your cost up.  The cost of the lane #1 balls will eliminate 90% of your potential customers. And you can generally find other manufactures balls that will do essentially the same thing for a lot less money.

So it becomes a special order item that a bowler has to come in and request.

We treat all the small manufactures the same way. We can get them but we don’t keep them in stock.

Sawbones – Yes you can and we would price the ball in that way which would be below retail. But we do that with most of the premium balls. We have developed a formula of what we feel the value of drilling the ball is and the price of the ball has little to do with it. We make about the same on mid range balls as the high end balls. Lane 1 balls are still going to be $30 to $40 more expensive than other premium balls. And that amount of difference is often a hard sell just as the difference between a mid range and premium ball.

One is that many customers buy on impulse and/or they want the ball now.  Lane 1 balls are not in that much demand and their high wholesale cost keeps us from stocking them on the shelf.

Some comes with familiarity of the balls and it’s not just lane 1. We find it hard to recommend balls we have not seen in action and going by manufacture propaganda can be dicey. There are very few Dynothane, Rotogrip, Wilson, LaneMaster, Morich, etc balls around. The local pros are using Brunswick, Ebonite, Columbia, Storm, and Track so they are the ones that are creating interest. You have to stock what sells the most volume.

Lane #1 is non existant on our pro shop shelf in Suburban
North Chicagoland area. Hammer, Storm, and Track are the
main sellers, Brunswick Inferno's are selling well. My
pro shop operator/owners refuse to sell them because they
sit on the shelf, and they must by in quantity direct, and
their distributor does not carry them. Once in a while, an
internet ball will be brought in for drilling. No exposure
on the lanes and in the pro shop.
