eBay Bowling Sales... Not so good!!!
« on: July 29, 2013, 08:07:41 PM »
Just completed the sale of 4 used balls on eBay.  Three were current line equipment (as of last year) that I had purchased as single drills; the other was a NIB that I drilled.  I had the thumb adjusted on the three to change spans and the NIB had thumb moved a bit to change pitches...  A little plug work showing around the thumbs, but definitely not full plug jobs.  All covers were in really nice condition.  At the end of the selling process, here was the breakdown:

Shipping (UPS): $98.02
eBay Fees: $14.16
Paypal Fees: $5.32

Net Profit: $5.01!!!

From which I am going to deduct $4 in packing supplies, paper, printer ink, etc., 40 miles of driving to my local UPS store, and 2-3 hours of my own time listing, packing, printing labels, and driving to the UPS store.

I think it is clear that I would have been better off from a time, effort, and fiscal point of view to trash the four balls in the dumpster at work and be done with them!

If you don't get at least $10 to $15 a ball, you can't even break even now that eBay gouges on final value fees applied to the shipping charges.

Your better off selling them on one of the bowling web sites, than eBay.

I know BR will not charge you a fee, not sure of BBE.

This site isn't a shadow of what it used to be for selling used equipment.  I posted 4-5 balls and didn't even get anyone trying to haggle on the prices... and it's not like I'm an unknown quantity here.

Sell them locally. I use craigslist all the time to sell my used equipment. Ebay is not what it used to be. Craigslist is free to list and you can meet people at a mutual destination if you don't trust giving out your address. I haven't had a problem using this site yet.

You over paid on shipping.

If you use the fedex option through ebay with a discount it is $15 to $20 max per ball in most cases.

Yes in most cases your still getting little for what you sold but that is the bowling industry. Why buy used when new is so cheap. Plus the fact they were plugged, no matter how little, doesn't help.

Do you itemize on your taxes? Donate them to junior bowlers and write them off...

That's what I had tried before but the few centers I tried to do that at said thank you but no thank you.  So I just decided to leave the balls on their rack.

I don't bother writing them off, but my pro shop takes donations for HS bowling.

BBE doesn't charge a fee for selling equipment, but you're only allowed to sell 1 NIB ball each month unless you purchase an authorized retailer membership. All members can sell as many used balls as they want, however.

I too agree with you that ebay Bowling Sales is good..I too find the product very expensive and sometimes the quality is not so good :( .
Do you have any suggestion where I can sell or buy good products at reasonable price.
