URETHANE WINS!

 Many here have told me in the past that urethane was useless, and that it was, like polyester, only for spares or extremely dry shots. So, what do you say now?

 Yeah, maybe it doesn't hook like resin can, but it gives the player control and predictability that resin doesn't.  I'll take hitting the pocket every shot and carrying 60% over hitting the pocket 60% of the time and carrying them all but wondering where that other 40% are going or what they will leave.

  After all, on a THS, how much help do you need?

I am also a big time fan of urethane. So consistent and smooth. everyone should have one in the bag.

Agree with drrev: I think that urethane has been neglected in the past 10 years because reactive resin was (and is) all the rage. "who would buy an an old ball"?

But with ever-aggressive coverstocks (and IMO decline of oil volumes due to cost management), the smooth reaction of urethane becomes appreciated by more and more players, so that manufacturers start building urethane balls that cover with true cores a wider range of lane conditions. Such balls have been around, yes, (e. g. the SBG, or the Pure Hammer), but those were rather special purpose pieces.

Now there are balls like the Liberator or the Natural that actually work on medium conditions - and IMHO this has been a "natural" development on the market, at least reaction-wise. That urethane sees a kind of revival is a bit surprising to me, but, hey, these things are a great addition!

I agree with all that has been said.  I have a Natural that I have tried dull and polished.  It has had it's moments dull, but reactive stuff always seemed to give me a better look.  Polished, I really like it for the later blocks and the finals of tournaments where they don't re-run the lanes.  If they are really hooking, I am confident that I grind out a 200-220 game and at least give myself a chance.

If I'm not mistaken the liberator used the same coverstock that was on the original U-Dot...............how is that too strong?

Visionary has been making urethane balls for years with the same cores as their reactive balls. Current ball is Ogre Urethane.

Juggernaut,

The problem is we are a select few. Most bowlers don't want hear or read about control and predictability. That's boring. Its all about the HOOK! How many boards can it cover.

It depends on the bowler. Anyone who says urethane doesn't hook or doesn't strike obviously doesn't know what they are talking about or maybe never used it.

I watch ESPN classic here and there and if you watch some of the events from the mid 80s with Walter Ray, Parker Bohn, Amleto Monacelli, or Bob Learn Jr then you would know what urethane can do.

I watched a few different matches one between Bohn and Walter Ray from 1985 where both were playing the exact same shots they do today and both scored in the 250s. Parker was wheeling it off the gutter and Walter was around the 2nd arrow striking for days.

Other matches with Bob Learn Jr and Monacelli were no different. Both were swinging the whole lane and both scored 230+.

Yes reactive is more angular on the backends in most cases but urethane still hooks a lot. It also depends on the bowler. I know a really good lefty who is throwing an original purple Nitro and averages 230-240 with several honor scores and has been for years.

It WAS an extremely dry shot on those lanes.

Not saying Urethane can''t hook/you can''t make Urethane work on normal shots, just that those lanes were super high friction and the two high-rev (well, Rhino is probably not super high-rev like Cimenelli) lefties had to jump to Urethane.
