Ebay shipping charges

When I sell anything on Ebay, I charge ACTUAL shipping.  What is with this flat rate of 18, 19, 20 even 25 bucks?  I see lots of stuff I MIGHT be interested in but not with those shipping costs.  I know that most people are making an extra 3 to 8 bucks.  I don't like to be ripped off and do feel it is necessary to do the same to others.

Is there some rational behind this I am not seeing?

I ship balls, bags, etc, I double box, put a small foam sheet under/on top, the box cost is not much (bulk cost) and for lower 48, i'm $2.00 over  for these things. Overseas, it's a bit more, it takes me 45 min to an hour to get the ball shipped, forms, heaver boxes etc. I agree, IF you are getting something close, 18-20 shipping is to much, but I'm sure the sellers are taking in the shorts for cross country shipping. For me, all I can speak for, I'd never do flat rate shipping, I always save the customer as much as I can. Sure, I want to make a small profit, but I'm not there to "make a living" out of ebay, it's more a hobby, and I started selling because our local pro shop closed. Local, that's why I started selling. Sounds corny, but to provide a service to our local bowlers, that's why I do what I do.

Yes, I have changed all my shipping last night, as I can see that this is as big an issue as the increases on ebay for stores and fees....

That is why I have all but stopped buying balls off ebay. Shipping fees have gotten way out of hand with some sellers. I am not going to pay an extra $7-$8 dollars to someone for shipping..

I have personally shipped over 100 balls the past 2 years and NEVER paid for an outside shipping box. I get them from my local pro shop for free..

I factor the cost of the shipping into the total price that I am willing to pay.  The total price is really all that matters, right.  If I can get a ball that I feel is worth $75 for $50 + $25 shipping, then it's still a good deal.  It really doesn't matter if it's $25 for the ball + $50 for shipping, I am still paying $75 for the ball.  Obviously, the higher the shipping charge, the less I'm going to be willing to bid.

Most of the time they don't get the price they want out of their product, so they nail you on shipping. I always try to charge the actual shipping.

If I ship anywhere with UPS it's gonna cost me 18.00 and if I go with FEDEX it is about 23.00  All the places in my area is very expensive to ship from.

That's why I don't sell balls.  If someone says they will ship me a ball for under 17.00 I say okay because they are gonna eat it.  When they find out how much it costs to ship.

Doc, where do you live?? I have shipped balls all over the US and never paid more than $14-$15 via fed ex ground..

Also, never heard of UPS being cheaper than fed ex..

We live in the SF Bay Area, and I will back him up on that it is true that shipping charges are ridiculous out here.

same here(also in bay area)...ive got stuff ive wanted to sell but its not worth it when quite a bit is just going to go to fedex.

new york city isnt any better.  when i calculate the price on ups.com, and then i go to actually ship it at he ups center, it always ends up 3-4 bucks more because of toll fees they charge because of the bridges the trucks have to cross on staten island, where i live.  when i sell on ebay, doing actual shipping on THEIR site is even worse, because their prices come out even lower than ups.com, which is already lower than what it will actually cost me to ship.  what i normally do is either charge a flat rate of $15, which is usually pretty close except for very close areas, and put a message in the shipping info section that the shipping price will be fully determined after the sale, based on the winners zip code and actual shipping price from UPS.  i also note that the maximum charge for shipping would be $18.  as long as they have the info before bidding, they have to acknowledge it, and i think my way of doing it is both fair and more informative than what everyone else does by charging $20 even if you live right next door.

Bingo. That is how I look at it and I thought most people saw it this way as well. Guess not. The only choices I have are..post office and ups b/c the nearest fedex ground terminal is an hour away. I have had to pay $24 to ship from east coast to west coast before via ups. The average cost is $14 to $18 just for shipping. Not to mention that the ups store charges $2.80 for a 10x10 box for the ball box to go inside. The bottom line is..figure out what your max price you're willing to pay is, and just figure the shipping in with your bid.

Guys,

Stop paying for boxes.. Go to your local pro shop and I bet they have a bunch they are just going to throw out. You can use a regular bowling ball box as an outside box for shipping, not a problem..

yeah.. i just saw that bowl.com raised their shipping charges from $19.95 to $20.95.  In my opinion that is rediculous and a rip off..especially when actual charges range from $7 to $15.  I rarely buy from a seller that charges a flat rate, just because of that.

bowlingball.com is outrageous.  Companies and people are trying to profit extra money off shipping which is rediculous.  Living on the east coast sometimes it costs me $20-$21 to ship to the west coast, but if I know my buyer is on the east coast or midwest, I'm not going to charge them 20 bucks because I can.  I either do exact shipping or an estimate(10 for east coast, 13-15 for midwest, 18-20 for west coast).  It costs me 9 bucks to ship a ball to florida I think it's crazy bowlingball.com gets to profit an extra 11 bucks whenever I buy a ball from them.

with the price of UPS going up its hard to judge what the shipping cost is going to be.  I sent a 15lb ball out last nite and it cost me $18.00 for shipping and i charged $20, so i barely broke even on the deal.
