I want to practice AT HOME
« on: November 18, 2005, 01:31:56 AM »
What can I do to practice bowling at home?

As long as I'm living in a small apartment it seems not possible for me to throw the ball in the house. It creates such a loud "bang" that would make my neighbours call the police.

Perhaps some exercises that strengthen my wrist or fingers will do.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks!

I have a light plastic eight pounder drilled fingertip that I will throw against a mat to practice my approach and release. Visualization is also very good to practice at home.

So how do you avoid creating a loud noise when the ball hits the floor?
Mats all over the floor and on the wall?

Thanks!

Put a pile of pillows against the base of your couch so that when the ball hits it goes up a small incline and then comes back to you. Drop to one knee, and practice your release from 5 or so feet away. As long as you're not lofting the ball, it shouldn't make very much noise at all when you let go. This is how I used to practice.

I have been testing a product called the EZ Bowler with my students.  So far there is some good things about it and some that I don't like but the product may be a good solution.  It is shaped like a barrel and has lines on it that allow you to see the rotation.  It does not have a thumb hole but does have adjustable fingers.  It seems to be durable.  I let 52 kids play with for a couple of hours the other night and it survived.  It will not damage walls or most furniture and is light weight.  The product comes with a dvd for instruction.  The dvd is good but needs still some work but gives you a good idea of what the product does.  I would suggest watching it a few times because you will pick up little things.  The things I don't really like...  and let me note they are no real big problem just very minor.  First it is not shaped like a bowling ball so the first reaction from students was wow what is that.  The shape of the EZ Bowler I believe is what allows it to do it's job properly.  Once that is understood everything is fine.  There is no thumb hole drives me nutz but once you deal with it for a while everything is ok.  The feedback from my students.  DO NOT USE IT AND THEN GO IMMEDIATELY  AND BOWL!   So they tell me.  lol  I understand that completely and I think that makes good sense.  The muscles revolt to the sudden change.  Over all I like the product but still think it might be a little more refined.  That naturally with all products comes about with time.  They have a website www.ezbowler.com

Don't throw a ball onto the couch.  You'll develop an awkward release since, unless you are standing next to it, you'll have to throw up ball to get on the couch and it really kills your speed/revs.  Believe me, I know this first hand.  I stopped bowling on the couch and I've noticed my release has been getting better.

I use my futon to practice my release and stuff. It works really well.

I concur.

We have one in the shop, helps a little with the timing and consistency of the release.
