What should a Benchmark ball be?
« on: May 11, 2010, 12:28:13 PM »
Hi everybody.
I think this is good topic to discuss.  I wrote an article describing what a benchmark ball should be and what it should do for you.  I don't mean which specific ball you want to be your benchmark, but rather what it represents. What's it's purpose?

Let me know what you think.

Now that it's summer, new balls will be coming out soon.  Before purchasing your next ball, think about this.  If you need a new benchmark ball, make sure it fulfills its intended purpose.

Unfortunately, it wound up being about "name your favorite ball".
That's cool, but I wanted folks to focus on understanding the purpose of a benchmark ball.

Of course a "benchmark" ball could be anything, because it all depends on where you're bowling and whether it's a fresh shot or second or third squad. I would not use the same ball to start out every time I bowl. Gotta see what's going on with the other reactions. If it's fresh then find out what others have been using and with what results. On my usual THS stuff, then you just use what you know will work and what ball is the most comfortable. The real key is to know exactly what every ball you have does in all kinds of conditions and that is just taking time to practice different shots. I'll be practicing with some new stuff this summer to get the feel for them before fall leagues start. That's why I don't like taking the summers off. Good deals on stuff and practice time!

I like your site. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the kind words.

I agree with you in your remarks.  It's really important to understand your arsenal and how they relate to each other.  It's true, a benchmark can be any ball as long as you feel comfortable with it and it gives you good feedback.  It's harder to get good feedback if you are not comfortable with the ball.
