Tournament bowler help
« on: September 26, 2015, 08:40:21 PM »
Looking for some input for oil pattern for tournament I run. This is my 10th year doing it and I always put out a Kegel Challenge pattern and have used all the navigational patterns. I don't bowl many tournaments currently so I am not out traveling every weekend like some on here. I like the Challenge patterns because I want all to be able to compete. The tournament is a State Mixed Doubles wit scratch and handicap division and I do not want the 235 average chasing others away and that is why I have always chosen a Challenge pattern. We will be bowling on 1 year old Brunswick HPL's. Was looking at Chichen Itza. Looking for a scorable pattern, but not a strike fest.

Not necessarily important, but HPL is an AMF, not a Brunswick surface.  As for patterns, there are many options out there.  The biggest problem is that even with challenge patterns, you end up with match up issues primarily due to length.  In the modern game somebody can make almost anything look too easy unless you go to extreme flat patterns.  I would suggest a slightly longer, pattern 42-44 feet, that has about 5 loads 2 to 2, and would graph around 3-1.  This puts enough OB out there to slow the stand left throw right crowd, but still give a little help in the middle for the typical slower ball speeds of women.

They are Brunswick Pro Lane. They were put in last fall.

I have always felt longer patterns favored the higher rev bowlers.  Shorter patterns have favored the straighter, lower rev bowlers.

Eventually, longer patterns will have a bump and the higher rev bowlers will be able to get the ball to react enough to carry.  The straighter bowler will have a hard time carrying with the lower revs and less of the lane for reaction.

Keep the length medium if you want to keep it fair for all styles.  As avabob stated, flatter patterns will prevent the throw left crowd from having a lot of success.

The modern game favors higher rev players in general, but longer patterns only favor high rev players with low axis rotation, rather than the stand left throw right crowd.  As a low rev guy myself my best luck is on either very short patterns or very long patterns.  It is the 39-42 foot patterns that I often struggle with.  Short patterns are probably toughest on high rev players, but they also hurt a lot of seniors and women.

It is very difficult to find a truly neutral pattern with respect to all styles and ability levels.  I agree that probably a 40 foot pattern with some OB gives the most styles a chance.

Anything with a 3:1 ratio is pretty difficult for a mixed tournament, especially on such a new lane surface.  Scores will probably be pretty low.  Most people, NOT the people that frequent this site, never bowl on anything that difficult.

It really gets down to styles.  At some level lane patterns don't really have much impact.  A lot of higher average women probably would struggle on a 3-1 pattern.  I read the original request to be addressing a concern about the power playing crowd coming in and posting telephone numbers.  If you start getting over 4-1 at 40 feet, it is surprising how big the scores can get.
