Quoted from the atricle...

"You have a higher margin with an open bowler," Hamilton said. "They'll think nothing of spending $30 to play a couple of frames. If you're a league bowler, you'll fuss if you have to pay 12 bucks."

That part's true because many of us remember when houses gave league bowler discounts.

what about this quote from the article....

"In any industry, we hate to see the consolidation," Berglund said. "It's fewer companies to go to for sponsorships. It's fewer people in the work force. But we also want profitable companies. If four is too many and it needs to be three to survive, so be it."

THey stated that there's more "consolidating" to come.  Stay tuned and, to all bowling industry employees, update your resumes.

This has been a long time coming, is no surprise, and is healthy for the industry. Almost anyone in the business of bowling could tell you it was only a matter of time. Anyone care to guess who's next?

I'm thinking Lane 1 will sell out to Ebonite or Brunswick. I also think one of the 3 brands Ebonite just bought will no longer exist soon. (DYNOTHANE)

I was bored a few days ago and wrote down all the current ball companies. To my count there are seventeen (17) labels out right now. I don't see how smaller companies, particularly Insite, Elite, and Banger, can survive the current climate. Some of these comapanies have more regional appeal, like Roto-Grip, and Lane Masters; while others now recent PBA/TV exposure like Morich. Others have a rabid fan base like Lane #1, and Visionary smartly doesn't overextend itself. It would appear that Circle and AMF300 lines are dead (purely specualtive until officially announced). Doing quick math, we're likely down to 15 in a few months.

Question: Is there really a profitable market share for 15 lines of bowling balls? I would think not.

Total demand for bowling equipment could be met with ONE ball company. I'm not saying that's going to happen or that it's a good thing or anything like that... I'm simply saying one ball company could meet demand.

The ball companies have been their own worst enemies for years. I'm happy to finally see consolidation and I hope to see more.

Further, I'm not surprised at all that it was Columbia. I've thrown Columbia stuff for years. My old Pulse is my all time favorite ball. All that said, Columbia has had Management and quality issues for years. The last 3 have been particularly bad.

Yeah, Columbia's leadership (or lack there of) was no existent at best. They seemed to be scared to make a technological change in there industry. That's part of the reason now they belong to Ebonite!

Yep Steve, you're right. I agree totally and have said in the past that they lacked R&D creativity with core designs opposed to Ebonite, late on the draw with new coverstocks opposed to Brunswick with Activator and then they sunk all that time, money and energy into Epoxy covers which were still not ready for the market as proven by their cracking issues and over 3300 sitting in a warehouse for clearence sales.

quote:
They tried to be creative with their technology, but the EPX-T1 never got the foothold they so desperately needed. If that goes the other way, they may have been buying Ebonite.

Nope, one gimmick ball was not going to save them.

Originally, the Track Machine was also suppose to be epoxy. Once Del saw all the trouble the EPX was having, he scrapped the epoxy for pearl particle!

Most bowlers today don't know what they want, OR what's best for their game!!
