Title: Ebonite The One Demolished - No More Ebonite For Me

This isn't the first time I have had Ebonite balls.  For some reason though, their equipment always goes to hell when I have used it.  This crack happened to me after about 3 games.  I got this ball used and have done so before for many balls and this stuff never happens to any of them.  This is ridiculous.  I don't know why this happens but this is just another reason why I don't like Ebonite as a bowling ball company.

Maybe a problem with the fit of the thumbslug? Looks a little suspicious that the crack starts right in the middle of the thumbhole. Just an observation.

Looks like the crack originated in the plugged area.  That could have also caused it.

Yeah, looks like it could have been a problem with the slug.  Might have caused some damage when it was being pounded in, and just like a windshield, a small crack in a bowling ball can go a LONG way.

Mr. Lebowski, this is Bill Salnicker with the Southern Cal Bowling League, and I just got a, an informal report, that a member of your team, uh, Walter Sobchak, drew a firearm during league play. If this is true of course, it contravenes a number of the league's by-laws, and article 27 of the league...

Switch to Visionary. Their coverstocks are 2-3 times as thick as most other brands. I've had (used) balls crack similar to yours. Like yours, this usually happened within the first few games. I was disappointed, but hey, you
take your chances with anything used. Now if it was NIB, that'd be a different story!

If you bought this ball used no way you know how the previous owner took care of this ball. He could have left it in the trunk of a car.. Plus when you plug a ball you take a chance of cracks happening. I have had numerous balls crack after plugging..

If you where the original owner of this ball and knew how it was taken care of since it was drilled, then you would have a reason to complain..

IMO, this has absolutely zero to do with being an Ebonite ball.. This kind of stuff just sometimes happens, nothing can be done to prevent it other than not buying used stuff..

I suspect improper drilling.  The crack starts from the thumb.

Thanks guys for opinions.  More are welcomed or similar stories.  I have just never had good luck with any Ebonite equipment since the 90's.  I went back to try The One because my doubles partner for a tournament last year used his and he was on the PBA tour for 5 years (2000-05).  The ball was good while it lasted but cracked oddly.  I knew the exact time it cracked because I hit the pocket solid but left something like the 8-6 split.  I was like WTF?

I have since turned to what I consider the greatest ball of all time - The Helix.  I averaged 222+ last week with it.

My son had one and it did the same thing. No drastic temperature changes, no dropping it on the floor, no improper drilling, etc., it was a mystery.

Our shop saw only a few of them crack out of many that were drilled.  Overall the Ebonite equipment has been good quality.  I think it was just one of those flukes.

I had a Crush/R crack on me in 1999. I wasn't dissuaded from buying an SR300 a few months ago. I've see a cracked Vapor Zone and numerous super-flex resin Columbia 300s.

There's something more here than one company's balls crack while others' do not.

I've got a cracked Ravage, so even Big B covers aren't immune...

well if its the ball company were ripping at then let's not leave out roto grips epic battle. I can't even tell you how many people had this ball crack on them. personally I have had both balls and my one is still all in 1 piece. if its ebonite you think you are having bad luck with I can send you another used and new one and see if you have any problems with cracking.

Of all the balls I have ever owned, here is a list of the ones that have cracked on me.

Ebonite Matrix
Hammer Blade (Ebonite made)
Columbia Super Beast (super flex cover)
Columbia Pulse (super flex cover)
Columbia Outrage (super flex cover)
AMF Firehawk (cracked across the bridge, that is a different type of crack in my mind)

From my experince, the Columbia flex covers and Ebonite covers in general are the most prone to cracking.  I have never had a Storm, Rotogrip, Visionay, or Brunswick cover crack on me.  And I would think that any ball that uses a think cover, most notabley Visionary, will have fewer occurances of cracking.

Well now that you mention the SuperFlex covers, my Ti is also cracked to pieces around the fingers.  But I let that slid because it is from 1999 and probably has over 1000 games on it with 1 resurfacing during that time.  This The One had less than 100 games and the crack is a lot worse than the one on my Ti.  I can still bowl with my Ti.  I am pretty sure the next strike I bowl with The One, will be the last time it ever rolls straight.  One of my friends told me to just bowl with it until it splits apart.  I am pretty sure the next time I lay it down on the lane, it will bust open haha.

In my experience, the toughest covers are Storm (never had cracks, barely any chips at all), and Brunswick (quantum included, these balls are freaking unbreakable diamonds - especially the Helix).  Haven't tried Visionary.  The Lane #1 I have is pretty solid cover - can't say the same for the weight block or reaction however LOL.

I don't care for Ebonite, (no secret) but I had a Big One that cracked and they replaced it pronto. Excellent customer service. Doh! Did I just say that?

Traded it for a Scorchin Inferno. Big B forever!

I also had a Black Omega LM crack on me too.  Forgot all about that ball until mr845 mentioned it.

I had a black Omega LM crack on me as well, after about 3 weeks of normal use. I also had a Pacific Storm that cracked(left it sitting in the bag for several months, picked it up and there was the crack). I also had a Pro XSI crack, but this one saw a lot of temperature changes, so I'm not too surprised. Out of the 80+ balls I've owned, those are the only ones that cracked on me.

Nope, never happened to my Ebonite balls. Had a The One that I threw for over a year, easily 300+ games on it. Lost its reaction around the 250 games, but still hit well enough for me to use as a second shift ball. Have an SR300 that is used well over 200 games, same deal, didn't lose its reaction, I just haven't redrilled it yet (my style has changed, and the way its drilled causes me to roll over all three holes).
