Redemption or still just a lucky night?
« on: January 06, 2011, 01:11:52 AM »
Tuesday night in our scratch league i finished the set with 300 for 817. The thing is, i didnt deserve or remotely feel like i earned either of those. I feel like 250-720 was all i really earned. Hits that should have carried cost me about 40 or 50 pins, but shots that fell that should have had no chance gave me at least 100. However, i got up in the tenth of the last game, needing the first one for 800 and all 3 for the 300. First one in the tenth was one of the best shots of the night, i tugged 11 a bit and was a tad soft with 12 but i hit right where i was aiming. So in a way i feel like i earned it, and in another way i dont feel like i should have even had a chance at either score. I thumbed some shots pretty bad, i had some 3 board tugs, i had some thumb and tug shots. I only had a few ugly carry jobs, but the bad shots off my hand found the pocket more often than not. Should i feel good that i made the shots i needed, or is it just one of those fall into your lap nights. I told my wife after the 6th ball of the last game that it felt like a 300, even though i wasnt too happy with most of my shots. Im a perfectionist, so im pretty hard on myself normally, but when other people start making comments about you getting away with stuff, you know you have the horseshoe securely wedged.

That's just like, your opinion, man.

stuff happens. you have two more honor scores. so deal with it

I'm in the process of trying to find out where I fit in the bowling world. I do not know my tech specs of my game, but it's all a learning process.

Until they set up a category that displays "Lucky" or "BS" honor scores, why care?  It has been and always will be "how many" and not "how"...

I stone 8s and 9s like its cool...

I've thrown a 300 where I didn't hit the same spot twice the entire game and even had a crossover (which is actually very rare for me), but everything just seemed to fall.  On the other hand, I've had games where I threw what felt like 9 perfect shots, got up in the 10th frame, and crushed a high flush 7 pin or stone 8 pin off a shot that looked just as good as the others.  And even on sport shots sometimes things just fall and you get a lucky game or set.  The balls are round, the pins are rounded, weird things happen.  Over the long run, though, things tend to even out.  That's why most tournaments are more than just three games long. :)

hampster - great game and set regardless. I see where you are coming from, but remember a THS allows for those bad shots to strike.....if you would have been on PBAX / sport...your assumption of 250-720 is probably most accurate.

Yeah i guess everybody else is carrying stuff they shouldnt also, but it would be nice to be able to feel proud of all my honor scores, not just some of them. I can handle one bad or marginal shot in a 300, and i can handle one a game in an 800 because realistically you are going to get some breaks somewhere, but i pushed it pretty hard. I suppose you cant asterisk 750s that should have been 800s, so i suppose ill just say it was payback for all the stone leaves that have cost me, but it just feels like a hollow "accomplishment."

Don't worry, I CARRY EVERYTHING!!!  I admit it!  I trip four pins regularly, and get more than my fair share of good breaks.
My opponents never get any breaks. You'd think that they never carried a Brooklyn...

Redemption?  Lucky Night?  I dunno.  But it sure does sound an awful lot like a FIGJAM to me...

Nice shooting though.

True, but i would rather be on that side of the fence than be that guy who is delusional and thinks he is awesome because he got away with a bunch of stuff. Yeah, im super happy about the scores, but im trying to stay grounded and keep it in perspective. I like these kind of theoretical polls, but i have trouble coming up with stuff sometimes, so ill just wait until it happens and then post about it. And if we want to talk about figjams, we could talk about the 799 i had last year where on the last ball of the set, all i had to do was pick up the 6-10 for 800 even. Yeah, i choked big time and picked the 10 off after pacing around for 2 minutes doing some math and worrying instead of just picking up the spare and taking the score. And that was after missing a 3-6-10 earlier that game because i was thinking about 800 already.

Im gonna start another post, i feel a rant coming on . .

Rant on Brother Hammy!

And I don't know why, but the 3-6-10 is in my head.  The 3-6 I get nearly every time.  The 6-10, no problem.  3 Pin? fine. 6 pin? fine. 10 pin?  I'd rather see that than any other leave, I don't miss it very often.  But for some reason, the 3 of them together = me chopping the 3 off and leaving the 6-10.  Dumb thing is I'll convert the 3-10 most of the time - definitely more often than I cover the 3-6-10.

Thankfully I don't leave this very often, but when I do it's almost a guaranteed open.

Enjoy it while you got it.
