ego with equip smarts (poll/vent)
« on: March 05, 2007, 12:54:48 PM »
tonight after league, i ran into the proshop to get some more cleaner. while in there, the driller was talking to a customer about a new ball. the customer wants a ball that will go longer than his BW drilled straight up and be smoother. my driller (who i don't trust my own stuff with when it comes to layouts) suggested puting the pin of the new Toxic next to the ring finger and cg in the palm (my driller's specialty, as in that is the only thing he really knows how to do/he's lazy). now without knowing that customer's pap, that will probably be more aggresive than the BW. after about 4 min. of discussion, i chimed in.

I suggested that we find his PAP, then go 5.5" from PAP over the bridge with the CG on the negitive side to smooth the breakpoint(the guy was a cranker so the 5.5 would be ok)

I realize that i'm only 17 but i know that i know alot more than my driller ever will. i have to map out my own stuff to take to him. now thats not saying he's not a good driller, he just doesn't know layouts.

well, after my input, my driller then goes off on the fact that i'm a "17 yr. old smarta** little b***h" right in front of the customer and my parents. it didn't stop there but i'll leave out the rest (lets just say my parents had a comeback or two).

i do realize that my driller is "old school" in the fact that "you can't go wrong with label" but i was trying to help out this customer with what i know, so that he might return again (needless to say, i won't). however, with this rant, he lost at least one very worthy customer (i'll still go to the same shop, but work with the other driller).

so...what are your thoughts on the matter????

was i right to add my 2 cents in order to help someone???

was my driller right to say that just because of my age that he knows more than me???

what would you have done if you were me or the driller?????????

a message to everyone...

i do realize that i may have crossed the line by going against a driller in his own shop. however, i didn't, in no way shape or from, mean to sound insulting to the driller by ANY means. i've known him for a while and he can cut 3 holes in a ball like nobody's business (fit is always perfect) but i was just trying to help out the customer and i don't feel that i "worded my words" in a way to sound insulting, but as a friendly suggestion to the customer. i never said "...dont listen to him, do this instead..." or implied it in the least. it was like a "since we don't know your PAP, its kinda hard to tell how that will work for you even though it could be great for you, in that case, why dont we find your PAP and maybe think about a layout of...."

I NEVER TOLD THE DRILLER HE WAS WRONG OR AN IDIOT, I ONLY MADE A SMALL SUGGESTION!

I repect the fact that it is his shop, NOT MINE, but for all i know, he was trying to get another $60 out of the guy buy making him redrill it or even buy another ball. thats just the kind of owner he is (and i've known him long enough to realize it). for example, one kid in my league is needing his first reactive ball, instead of a tropical or a groove, he's trying to sell a G-force to a 13 yr. old (while i understand that it will hook, its not what the child needs at that high price of an investment)

To end the story for some of you, the customer told the driller that he would think about the layout and come back. i don't know what happened after that

Please, keep your thoughts coming
