tonight after league, i ran into the proshop to get some more cleaner. while in there, the driller was talking to a customer about a new ball. the customer wants a ball that will go longer than his BW drilled straight up and be smoother. my driller (who i don't trust my own stuff with when it comes to layouts) suggested puting the pin of the new Toxic next to the ring finger and cg in the palm (my driller's specialty, as in that is the only thing he really knows how to do/he's lazy). now without knowing that customer's pap, that will probably be more aggresive than the BW. after about 4 min. of discussion, i chimed in.
I suggested that we find his PAP, then go 5.5" from PAP over the bridge with the CG on the negitive side to smooth the breakpoint(the guy was a cranker so the 5.5 would be ok)
I realize that i'm only 17 but i know that i know alot more than my driller ever will. i have to map out my own stuff to take to him. now thats not saying he's not a good driller, he just doesn't know layouts.
well, after my input, my driller then goes off on the fact that i'm a "17 yr. old smarta** little b***h" right in front of the customer and my parents. it didn't stop there but i'll leave out the rest (lets just say my parents had a comeback or two).
i do realize that my driller is "old school" in the fact that "you can't go wrong with label" but i was trying to help out this customer with what i know, so that he might return again (needless to say, i won't). however, with this rant, he lost at least one very worthy customer (i'll still go to the same shop, but work with the other driller).
so...what are your thoughts on the matter????
was i right to add my 2 cents in order to help someone???
was my driller right to say that just because of my age that he knows more than me???
what would you have done if you were me or the driller?????????

I don't know layouts by any means, but if you knew that the driller was giving bad advise, you did the right thing by telling the guy. When I have a ball drilled, I tell the guy what I want out of it and he does it. I have confidence in his knowledge and experience. If I didn't I certainly wouldn't go to him, and the average league bowler who doesn't know what the hell a layout is won't know if the driller is good or not. So hopefully, the guy having the ball drilled realized by the driller calling names, he didn't have a comeback to your comment. So yes, bowling balls aren't cheap, I would hope someone would chime in if my driller was doing something wrong. Good job.

IMO, you were both "wrong". You could have offered your advice to the person without the pro shop guy around. And he should have bit his tongue. It was nice of you to want to help, but you probably embarrassed him by claiming to know more than he does while in front of a customer. With that said, he should not have handled the situation like he did.

Just curious what happened to the customer? did he get a ball drilled your way
or the drillers way etc?

If it is the driller's business---you should never critique him in front of a paying customer. You would not like it if someone would do it to you.--You could have pulled the customer aside and talked ball tech with him to see how much he knows ect... Maybe have the customer get another opinion ect..
-
It's his pro shop and I assume he is paying rent/lease and it's his turf NOT yours. Keep your mouth shut.
Get the person aside and don't even offer your opinion just say I think you should get another pro's opinion.

I would have probably done the samething you did, although the right thing to do would have been not to say anything at all about it. I agree with the fact that it is his shop therefore he doesn't need to have people 2nd guessing his intelligence (in in this case lack there of.) Now being that said the driller had no right what so ever to go off on you as he did. Personally that was very uncalled for and very unprofessional. I would probably go back to the driller and apologize for making the comment (just to show you are the bigger man.) However I would have nothing to do with his shop anymore if it is avoidable including the second driller, also if this guy is not the owner of the shop I would contact the owner and explain to him how he acted. I highly doubt that they want people like that representing there company. Oh and hopefully after that display the customer took his business else where cause it i was the other customer I wouldn't have bought anything from him.

While your thoughts and your intentions were good, you have to realzie that telling the pro shop's customer that the driller was an idiot in front of the driller was the best way to help the customer.
Besides the fact that, although you probably have learned more and have that information available to help those who want it, for most people, bowlers included, you have to prove that you know what you're talking about, before people will listen and believe you.
If you're 17 years old, you probably look like you're 17. Given that, until people are shown by some demonstration or someone they know says you know what you're talking about, what do you think will happen when you tell a "supposed" expert that they are wrong in public??
For future refernece, I don't think you should try to get anything drilled by that shop any more.
Regarding the Toxic and a Black Widow: I don't know if any drill of a Toxic will get both more length AND less backend out of it than a BW. Might need to manipulate a Pure Hammer, a Vibe or a Doom to do that.

I agree you should not have said anything in front of HIS customer, but at the same time, if he had called me those names, i would never have to worry about him, because i would be barred from the center forever after i drilled his head RICO. calling you names was WAY out of line
-
I agree with most here and that you shouldn't do that to the driller. That is his business. You may have cost him customers and money. You should of suggested to the customer or just not said anything at all. That is the customer's problem if they don't know enough about layouts. Usually I just bring in a layout sheet and tell the driller to drill it like the one I circle or point too. Problem solved.

Yeah I wouldn't step on the driller's toes in front of a customer like that.

You know, after giving it some thought, I don't think interupting him was such a bad thing and here's why. If the driller is not going to drill the ball right, guess what's going to happen... The ball is not going to react right and the customer is not going to be happy. The customer is then going to be unhappy, and either not return to that pro-shop, or become a royal PITA. It is much easier to do it right the first time.
I'm also on your side because I have delt with old-school drillers before and guess what, that's exactly why I don't go there anymore. I have had my last dozen or so balls punched from the same shop and the reason is, it's because they work with me. The Old-school guys tend to get royally offended if you second guess their drilling.
At the end of the day, you were trying to help his customer, NOT HIM... His answer should have been, "Well let's see you throw a few balls and we'll determine what's best". I have chimed in numerous times when in my pro-shop, usually like, "I've seen this guy throw and perhaps an Envy would more fit his style and here's why...."Usually my driller will respond with "If that's your style, perhaps that ball may work best for you and here are some others that may work well also"... My advice to you is, Don't work with someone who is lazy, because that's what it sounds like. Also, it's unprofessional to criticize a customer in front of another customer the way that he did. He could have just as easily have said "Thanks for the advice man, but I think this will work best because...." Anyway, I'd take my business elsewhere.

Yeah that's true too.

In my opinion you were right and wrong and I agree with some of the stuff in this post.
You were wrong in the fact you got into your drillers way and told him he was wrong basically. At the same time, he needs to be thankful because you did something right. You saved his butt.
If that customer would have walked out and not been happy with the drilling or the layout, then he would have complained and told one person who would have told another and that man could lose alot of business like that. You saved him business by chiming in.
I also do agree that he was wrong in saying what he said to you in front of the customer no less your parents dude. Im suprised your father didnt lay his as* out lol.

First off the driller should measure the bowlers pap or the ball won't be laid out correctly. Next, the TOXIC has a lot of built in length. So the ball is going to go longer than the BW even if it's drilled stronger. Another thing is the TOXIC is not going to be smooth. The TOXIC and smooth don't go together. I think the TOXIC was a bad choice of ball for what this guy wanted.
Putting the CG negative a small amount on the TOXIC is not going to smooth it out. It's really not.
You have to understand this is his shop not yours. For you to come into his business and tell him how to layout out a bowling ball is going to be an insult. Your best bet is to just not go into his shop anymore. There you go problem solved.

a message to everyone...
i do realize that i may have crossed the line by going against a driller in his own shop. however, i didn't, in no way shape or from, mean to sound insulting to the driller by ANY means. i've known him for a while and he can cut 3 holes in a ball like nobody's business (fit is always perfect) but i was just trying to help out the customer and i don't feel that i "worded my words" in a way to sound insulting, but as a friendly suggestion to the customer. i never said "...dont listen to him, do this instead..." or implied it in the least. it was like a "since we don't know your PAP, its kinda hard to tell how that will work for you even though it could be great for you, in that case, why dont we find your PAP and maybe think about a layout of...."
I NEVER TOLD THE DRILLER HE WAS WRONG OR AN IDIOT, I ONLY MADE A SMALL SUGGESTION!
I repect the fact that it is his shop, NOT MINE, but for all i know, he was trying to get another $60 out of the guy buy making him redrill it or even buy another ball. thats just the kind of owner he is (and i've known him long enough to realize it). for example, one kid in my league is needing his first reactive ball, instead of a tropical or a groove, he's trying to sell a G-force to a 13 yr. old (while i understand that it will hook, its not what the child needs at that high price of an investment)
To end the story for some of you, the customer told the driller that he would think about the layout and come back. i don't know what happened after that
Please, keep your thoughts coming
