Fouls???!!!
« on: March 22, 2006, 03:33:57 AM »
In league a month or so ago (a 4-person mixed league, sanctioned, mostly couples from their 20's to 70's) a guy we were bowling against stuck on the approach, went flying, landed 3 or 4 feet down the lane. Everyone rushed to make sure that he was OK, and once assured that he was, I reset his pins to a full rack on the second ball cycle (he had gotten 8 pins from the throw) and corrected the automatic scorer. ( I am the captain of my team). He proceeded to throw his next shot and that was that. Or so I thought.

That incident occured during the first game of the night. As I was putting my stuff away at the end of the night he attempted to give me a rash of bull. Moaning that it was a fun league, no need to call a foul in a fun league, the foul lights are never working (though the house says they are) etc. etc. Told me that the league secretary told him that I shouldn't have called a foul (she has denied saying any such thing). I tried to calmly to explain to him that we are a sanctioned league and have to abide by rules. I used a golf analogy (as he is also a golfer) regarding calling an infraction on yourself.
He was adamant, as was I, and he no longer speaks to me. Needless to say, I am pretty flabbargasted by the whole thing. Unbelievable.

Unfortunately, I get to bowl next to the guy almost EVERY week(at least 8 or 9 out of 10). We are team #13 and they are team #15, check a 24 team schedule and you'll see what I mean. Since that time I have seen people foul against him and he tells them not to worry about it!! He, in turn, has seen folks foul against my team (and my own wife foul for my team) and the result is always the same...it's a foul.

Just curious as to your opinions. Should I have handled this differently initially? How should I deal with his current refusal to abide by the rules (especially since they work against his team)? Is it even worth it? And since when did enforcing fouls become optional in a sanctioned league?

Your were absolutely correct. Do not back down from guys like these.
I observed something once that invloved a rule that two guys couldn't agree on. An opponent showed up later than the 5th frame in the first game and although he agreed his team had to take a blind score for that game, he stated that he would bowl the last 4 frames of that game as a pacer and to "get loosened up". His opponent said he couldn't. The discussion turned into a pushing match which turned into the late guy getting whacked in the eye by the guy he pushed, who was wearing a Scorpion wrist strap (the one with the finger projection)- opened him up like a can of tuna. Cops showed up and everything.

I think the guy is a jerk.  A foul is a foul, and he should get used to the idea of following the rules.
Sounds like a chump to me!

Ok, if it was a "typical" foul where he overslid by an inch, I wouldn't have called it because depending on the angle, you never really know...HOWEVER, it sounds like his whole body was over the line.  Sounds like a crybaby to me.

One said, "the only thing I have to say if it is just a fun league why is this guy so concerned about the foul?"

Because those are the rules. Why bother bowling in a sanctioned league? Goofy.

And another said if he only fouled by an inch, he wouldn't have called it?

That's like saying if you robbed a bank of only $500, you shouldn't be arrested because it wasn't a million. Even better, if the guy didn't like the 10 pin he left, why not "frame erase", re-rack and roll the frame over? Same difference.
