embarrasing and heartbreaking moment in bowling
« on: October 15, 2009, 01:15:53 AM »
last night, a guy in my league who had never shot 300 before, had the front 11. Half of the alley stopped to watch his final shot and wouldn't you know it...he dumped it in the gutter half way down the lane! XXXXXXXXXXX- =290...Very heartbreaking but it was his high game.

Oh man....  He had to have been super nervous & flowing w/adrenaline at the same time.  Still a great game, but always that what if until he actually throws one.  Good luck to him getting it soon.

At least the ball made it halfway down....in a sacntioned tourney a couple of weeks ago, there was a guy who had the front 11 looking for his first 300.  His last ball didn't even make it past the arrows.

If you search fail 300 on youtube, supposedly there is a video of it.

A friend of mine (scratch bowler who had shot 300 before) had first 11, off the ankle and in the ditch before the arrows for 290 about 20 years ago when 300 was still more of a big deal.

I've also seen first 10, pick off the 7 pin, make the spare for 281! This was a thumbless 160 avg bowler.

If you live long enough (and I have) you will see almost everything in bowling, and that's part of what keeps me coming back.

Ouch, feel bad for the guy cause now he's gonna get picked on and known as "that guy who guttered for 290". Hope he rebound's and come's back with another string next week.

Here is the craziest thing I have ever seen.

I a guy got a new ball drilled nd was so happy he showed it
off to everyone at the lanes before he bowled with it.

On his very first throw, the ball went/rolled real nice before
the pins and just before hitting the pins the ball went perfectly
up in the air verticle not to be seen but stuck up in the bowling pin
machine.

We heard crunch, crack.  The pin deck came down to wipe the pins away.

A moment later, the ball fell down before the pins and then
split in half.

Watching this, the guy started getting tears in his eyes.

He went to the desk.  They said they were not responsible
for plastic bowling balls.  He got in an argument with
the manager.

How in the hell did the ball go completely vertical before it hit the pins?

You'd be surprised how little it takes to get a ball to move in nearly a vertical line...  small parts do fall off of machines and make their way in front of the rakes and masking units.

I have asked myself that same question.

Maybe, a tech was working on the lanes earlier and left something
on the lanes?  A small piece of the ceiling fell down?

But, I am telling you, this is a true story.

About 20 years ago I had my ball go vertical also.About  6" before the pocket was a 4" screw. The
ball hit it just right propelling almost straight up.So yes this can happen.

I had a similar thing happen to me one time.  A screw fell off the machine and was sitting right at the pocket and when my ball rolled over it became air born.  It did not go straight up in the air, but hit the pocket in the air and struck.  My ball had a small gouge out of it and when I called it in, the laneman found the screw and gave it to me

As far as the OP goes, that really sucks to get that far and throw it in the gutter.  I've never seen it before, but have heard stories of this happening every now and then.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt seeing how it is possible that a nut or something fell off the pin setter. I don't know how the ball would go straight up though.

I can totally see that happening.  In my Friday Night league a couple of years ago (Cactus Bowl in Tucson, AZ).  On the pair we were bowling on that night, we noticed on one lane that the ball was catching air just prior to hitting the pin deck.  Fortunately for me, I was able to play away from that spot, but the next day they had a JBT tournament that one of the kids that was in the youth league that I coached in ended up on the same pair and it was still there.  We went and talked to the owner and after the tournment, I walked down the gutter with him and saw that one of the panels on the lane had been warped which was creating a ramp.  This happened between the last panel and the pin deck, so the ball could catch enough air to go that high, but if it was one panel earlier, it definitely would.
