optimum axis tilt?
« on: July 17, 2006, 02:09:07 AM »
What is to best axis tilt to have?  I have read that bowlers should try to avoid having a lot of axis tilt because it will cause the ball to spin more and be inconsistent.

What is your guys view on this?

I read somewhere that an axis tilt of about 20° was optimal, which means a track diameter around 10 1/2". This also results in a semi-roller release.
Lower tracks tends to spin the ball and hardly get the ball into a powerful roll. The ball might hook in the back end a lot, but it still spins and is prone to deflection, so suboptimal carry is the result. On the other side, less axis tilt comes very close to a full roller, which creates IMHO not enough entry angle and relies on direct hits. Low axis tilt works well on oily shots though (eraly roll), while high tilt creates a longer skid phase and is suited for shorter patterns.

Well I don't have much ball tilt at all with my normal release.  However I don't really have a problem with the ball rolling too early unless the lanes get really dry.  I throw the ball with enough ball speed to combat early roll problems.

I just thought I read somewhere that there is an optimal ball tilt that a bowler should try to achieve.

According to Mo Pinel the optimium axis tilt is between 13-20°, which corresponds to a track diameter between 10 1/2" and 11 1/2".

If you only have 5° if tilt odds are you will roll over the thumb at release and then the middle finger down lane. I have about 10° and my release track is quite close to the thumb and I have to keep the bowtie high to keep from flaring over the middle finger. whoever said that 5° was optimal wasn't thinking very straight. I have read some where that the optimal tilt is 13-18°.
I do agree with the 45° of axis rotation though.

5 degrees, thats probably why I have very good carry when Im bowling and just clipping the thumb.
I always bowl close to the thumb and have reasonably good carry but when it just touches the thumb its awesome.Dont want to hit it though, I hate that thump, thump down the lane.
Never realised that.

The Optimum Axis Tilt and Axis Rotation is subject to conditions and equipment.

Even though Team USA targets 5deg and 45deg of rotation, that doesnt mean it is the best. there are a lot of other factors to be considered.

I know Jeff C visits this site quite often, I'm guessing he is not 5deg and 45 deg rotation, and he has one of the most potent games in the sport today. I dont want to answer for him but I thought he tracked a little bit lower.

Axis Tilt and axis rotation doesnt make the bowler great, repeating shots does.

I have between 5-10 degrees. It's great sometimes, and not so great othertimes, depending on the condition and equipment.

My driller has to be careful because if drilled wrong, I will clip the thumb/finger holes, especially on less agressive equipment.

I carry just fine, sometimes almost too good(lots of 8's and 9's).
