Help me save....
« on: August 20, 2008, 05:24:55 PM »
Myself!!  I am so close to quitting the game I love the most. I have two issues. The first one is instead of sliding or planting my last step, for some reason I step away from my body to the left,I am right handed. The 2nd thing is my elbow is really far away from my body. No one can tell me if my swing is fine and because I walk away then my arm is out or, if there are 2 seperate problems.I have tried to walk towards my mark, keep my hand under the ball, the towel under the armpit. I have been doing it for so long I cannot stop it.No one seems to help and I can't afford a coach. I mentally crush myself each and every shot I throw. On a THS it's not really an issue but, since I've been bowling on sport shots I've realized just how average I am.Please someone,anyone....Does anyone have any tips? Has anyone gone through this?Anytime I ask someone they say it's my first step then, they say in the wrong direction. It seems no one wants to help because they don't want to see someone improve.I just want to get better.I am so mentally beaten if I can't get some help I might have to quit the sport I love. Thank you in advance!

One thing that may help and costs nothing is to practice the armswing in front of a mirror.  With either nothing in your hand or a light weight weight, take the arm throught he swing in while watching in a full length mirror.  This allows you to see what the arm is actually doing and, if done correctly helps to build muscle memory.

When practicing on the lanes watch the first step, make sure it is in time with the push away.  Often the first step can dictate the ultimate timing.  As for the step to the left, if it is consistent, work with it.  I have one of the juniors I work with who consistently drifts 5 boards right on his 3rd step.  I have him set himself farther left so he can just walk naturally and end up where he wants to be.  He also has armswing issues and this allows him to only focus on the arm.

Another possibility for the arm is to tuck the elbow with the arm actually pointing slightly right when you are in your stance.  This may help to keep the arm more in line with the body through the swing.

I hope some of this may help.  Best of Luck and I can 100% relate to the frustrations and struggle to keep trying when it seems  as if you are not making any progress in improving.

One thing that I would say is don't beat yourself up so bad. Also, when you practice, only practice on one thing at a time.

I think you should find some of the elite bowlers in your center and ask them for some help. Most of the time they would be glad to help for free. You can even ask your proshop operator most of the time and get help also.

Not everyone is going to charge you an arm and a leg for lessons, so be open minded and just talk to someone about it. If they dont help go to someone else for that matter.

Look for someone that even has a similiar style as you do for they can help the most at times.

The best thing is to practice with a video camera... Make some different physical movements and then watch it from the camera. This is one of the best bowling aids ever! Where are you from? Maybe you could even find someone on this site thats lives close by thats willing to help. Yeah its a long shot but you never know. There's some really great people here that someone like myself would love to help free of charge. John

Wow Thanks everyone for your help. It is people like you that make me love the game of bowling. I have tried just about every great bowler around. They are either puzzled, won't help or say this will take forever to fix because of muscle memory. I live in SE PA and would love to fix my horrible game. Thanks for everyone's support!
