Enforced break, what do i do for a couple months?
« on: January 13, 2010, 04:17:20 PM »
Hi all,

Just had some brain tumor surgery a few days ago and have 5 weeks radio therapy coming up soon to give some leftover tumor up there a bit of a fry to quieten it down.

Now of course i'll be feeling a little tired for a couple months or so while im recovering and would like to know how to keep the mind and body sharp. Foodwise im getting some help so its more the brain for me, never had to take so long off bowling so im a little worried what the hells gonna happen after a few months when i do pick it up again.

I'll prob just youtube a few old tourneys and stuff to keep the head in it and help out down the shop a day or so a week to start with, i think i'll do ok but any further advice will be appreciated
Thanks
Adrian

i'm sorry to hear about your recent medical trouble. i too am suffering a medical issue. last thursday night i felt so bad mt wife took me to the hospital.....hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.....the heart muscle has been enlarged due to a genetic defect and high blood pressure. no surgery needed but a change in medication and a drastic change in diet. the catheter that was inserted into the artery in my leg has caused some major swelling and bruising( and pain ). no bowling for me for awhile. i've gone to watching my oldr classic movies on dvd........ben-hur, spartacus, doctor zhivago, etc.  good luck and i hope you get well soon.

I gotta give you credit... you just got out of brain surgery and the only thing you're worried about is your bowling game!  Either you're hard-core, or they forgot to take out the part that is making you insane!

Jokes aside, I hope all goes well and you have a quick recovery.  As for the physical aspect, I dunno... I guess the best advice I could give there would be to stay on your feet as much as possible.  Keep the legs strong.  You could also get a racquet ball and squeeze on it to keep the hand strength up.  Push ups to keep the upper body in shape (depending on how much you work out - if you're already hitting the gym during the week, I wouldn't bother with my suggestions). Other than that, I think the rest will come back after you throw a few sets.

As for the brain, well you're asking the wrong guy.  My mental game has always been my weakness. lol  But I guess you could try reading - there are a couple of books people recommend here quite often (I don't remember them, but they're targeted to the mental aspect of bowling).  I should read them, but I haven't.

Best of luck to you, both on the lanes and off!

This would be a great time to do some coaching, if you have any inclination to do so.  Pick a few junior bowlers that have some potential and ask them if they'd like some help.  Work with things like timing, release, speed control, accuracy, adjusting, reading oil patterns (if they're advanced enough to get any good out of that).  Coaching can be very rewarding.  Of course, you won't be able to demonstrate yourself but maybe you can find someone that can do that for you.  --  JohnP

My wife has a lady friend that had a similar brain surgery about 12-18 months ago .. within 6 months she was back to doing everything done before the operation. I have no advice but I wish you the same luck .. listen to your doctor and you'll be back bowling before you know it ..

ive twice had to had prolonged time of bowling due to injury, 6 months for operation on achilles tendon on both legs and 8 months for a 2 breaks in my leg, broken ankle and bronken foor( all in one ). i found that goin down to the bowling alley to watch my leagues was best...... first few nights was annoyin due to wntin to bowl but after that it was alright. keepin in the game is definitley the best thing to do.
