engraving a ball
« on: March 02, 2010, 11:04:08 AM »
I love my driller....but when his engraver broke he decided not to replace it.  So when I buy a ball from him, it doesn't have any ID that it's mine. And I know that a lot of people don't engrave their stuff nowadays cause they want to be able to resell it.

Well... I generally keep everything I buy (that's another mental issue to be dealt with in a separate posting) and I prefer to have some kind of identification on a ball. Sometimes first name, sometimes just 2 initials. But SOMETHING that I can point to in case my equipment gets moved either on purpose or by accident.

And I know I should be able to go to any other pro shop and ask them to engrave the ball, and am willing to pay them for it ($5 or $10 would be reasonable, yes?). But I'd prefer to take it somewhere that can do a good job on it, and yet won't care where I bought it. Is there such a place that I am overlooking?

Has to be a regular brick and mortar store.  Even though I want the ball engraved, I'm not interested in sending it away for that. And probably a chain store that has a presence in several states (unless anyone knows of a place in the North/Northwest suburbs of Chicago.

Or is there some easy way I can engrave it myself? Without any special expensive tools?

Thanks for any feedback.

How about a Dremel and some engraving bits?

Or this one?

Thanks.  I think I'd still rather have someone with a steady hand and some experience do the actual engraving (if it's a power tool like the Dremel), but I suppose I could practice on another ball first.

Dremel-like tool would be the way to go, but doing it by hand will surely end in a messy scratching pattern (tried it at home, and I know how to use such a tool through model kit building).

As an alternative for a "personal touch", why not paint the engravings in a different color? Water-based acryllic paint can be found in any hobby/DIY store.

SLSM Designs in the Dallas area engraves bowling balls in just about any font.  The engraving is done with a Epilog helix laser engraver.  I have a ball with my name engraved around the thumb hole!

I wouldn''t be afraid to try it - you can get stencils.  You could also look into metal stamps (letters and numbers) and stamp your balls yourself.

Maybe something like these.

That''s what they used to use to put names/initials on balls.

Or, since the shop doesn''t want to fix it, maybe you can pick it up for cheap and fix it!

dependes on what brand engraver it is. some parts are hard to find. i'm working on rebuilding a Hermes engraver and it's been a chore finding parts. And the shop probably doesn't want to spend $1200.00 plus for a new one
