Release Change (Concerned)
« on: August 06, 2008, 10:22:21 AM »
Hi everyone,
It's been a while since I've posted as I've been comfortable with my game, but last night I had an interesting experience. I generally don't throw a big hook, and love to play down and in lines. However, while trying some different releases last night I was surprised to find that I could hook the ball much more than I thought I could. I still have to tinker with becoming more accurate with it, as I haven't had much experience with it, but I think it could benefit my game by giving me more options on how to play the lane.
As the title says though, I'm a bit concerned. Part of getting this hook involves bending my elbow a bit, which I'm not sure is good for consistency since it involves the use of more muscles. Next time I hit the lanes I'm going to try to get rid of the elbow bend, but I'm not how successful I'll be.
So I guess my question is: Should I be concerned about this elbow bend if I'm bowling well with it?

1 ball and three different releases is a three ball arsenal.
It is advantagous on many levels to know more than one release.
Many bowlers have had great success with a crook elbow release but it can be damaging to joints and tendons.
My advice would be to practice different releases using your regular arm swing.
You will find with the current ball technology you can get a variety of looks just by subtle position changes.even moving your fingers on the ball will affect roll.
Just read the ball reviews on any current release. The same ball will be a skid snap arcing smooth rolling unpredictable hook monster that covers three boards.
In the hands of a skilled bowler a ball can display some, none, or all of those traits.
Keep practicing those releases.
It can only make you a better bowler.

Thanks rack. The damage to joints/tendons is another thing I was worried about, so I'm really hoping I'm able to get rid of the elbow bend. It seems like it should be do-able.
