Actually, I might disagree with Mainzer a bit here ... for my game and the houses I bowl at (1 wood, 1 synthetic), there are markedly different reactions that require different balls and drillings.
I have found that the synthetic house has more oil, and tends to carrydown more. For this reason, I have a stronger solid ball with an earlier roll for use there. The 2nd house (with wood lanes) makes me use the pearl reactive because the heads dry up fast and any carrydown is usually absorbed, creating much drier conditions. I have a drilling that promotes a longer skid before turning over on the dry. It is more susceptible to over/under reactions, but it doesn't burn up early and hit weak and flat like the solid does.
I guess it all depends on your house and your lane conditions vs. how they match up with your style. Best thing to do is look at the individual reactions from each house and go from there.
