Another Ethical ?...........Need honest answers
« on: March 30, 2005, 06:23:11 AM »
I am secretary of my men's handicap league and I have a problem.

I have a really nice guy on one of the teams (215 average and can maintain that anywhere with his rocket-to-the-pocket #5 board roll-up, it's just hilarious!!) who is causing some unintentional ruckus in the league.  You see, he has very mild Tourette's Syndrome and every once in a while he will let out a low-pitched throaty "hhheeeeehhhhhh!!!!!" that lasts about 2 seconds.  For some approaching the line, it is distracting.  I can't tell the guy to get lost at the bar after his frame.  I have been talked to several times about this situation.  This is his first year in the league.

I am seriously torn between the guys who see this as a distraction and the guy who has earned every right to be in the league with us.  And no, I am not leaning either way based on the strength of his average.  The same conversation should be had for both the 135 guy and the 220 guy.  It is easy to say "Screw 'em" to the guys who threaten to leave, but there is a justification to their side.  There are two very arguable sides to this.

Please help, as I am really at a loss.

In my monday night league we have a slow guy who bowls...His teammates have to tell him which ball on the return is his, sometimes he stays up on the approach until his second ball, little things like that.  Everybody up here is pretty understanding about it...If you have a bowler that has tourettes, it's not like he can help or control his outbursts.  If it was intentional that is one thing, but from what you're describing it's not.  Personally, I find the popular "pin-action-give-yourself-a-high-five-you-just-got-a-strike-handslap" a lot more annoying.

It's not as big of a conundrum as you may think.  The only real problem that you are facing is the fact that you are the one who has the job of making it work.  Of course you can't (or shouldn't) ask him to leave; but you need to try to appease the people who have contacted you regarding the matter.  Our house has seating up and behind the lanes.  Most of our players make themselves at home up there until it's their turn.  We don't even pay attention to the noise coming from that area.  We're just used to it.  If you have a similar setup, maybe he and his WHOLE TEAM can sit up there.  This would show the other players that they are willing to do as much as they can to help.

We have had to endure physical handicaps, bad hygiene and more and still don't force someone to leave. Although the bad hygiene is coming close. I personally think they should be bigger than that and if they can't maybe they are the ones you might want to consider letting go.

All I can say is the d-ckh-ads having a problem need to take a lesson from Mr. Miagi and 'Focus, Daniel-san."  I'll bet money its a case of jealousy more than annoyance.  Not only are they bowlin with someone they probably think is lesser than them, THEY'RE GETTING THEIR ARSES HANDED TO THEM BY THE GUY!!!

That cat can "hhheeeeehhhhhh!!!!!" all night for all I care if he was bowling on the lane next to me. Show some comapsion and common sense.'

Tell the whiners they can pay up and leave.
