Ever been complimented during league?
« on: September 03, 2009, 05:27:03 PM »
So tonight was first nite of league.  Bowled ok, we split 4-3 (them), but considering most of my team hadn't really touched a bowling ball all summer, we did pretty good.

While we're packing up, shaking hands, etc., one of the guys on the other team says to me "Of all the people here, I really like watching you bowl.  You're really smooth and it makes me think of the things I need to work on."  I just said thank you.

I know I'm good, knowledgeable, and I help others whenever I can, but I am FAR from the best bowler, I average low 200's, while high average is around 230...and really 204 on a THS isn't anything to brag about, so I was taken a little by surprise.  It wasn't even like I had an outstanding nite, I only shot 644 (high game was 223).

Anything similar ever happen to you?

Does "You're really lucky" or "How lucky can one guy get?" count?

I've had similar happen to me as well.  I average around 205, 210 if I'm on fire.  But I've had a few people compliment me on my form and a few others compliment me on my actual bowling.  It's flattering and I take those compliments to heart.  I've worked hard to get to where I'm at, and it really helps me want to push further and bowl better.

Congrats on it, and I hope it leads to more and more

I've had that happen to me several times.I'm a very modest bowler and by no means the best bowler on any of my leagues but I do manage to end up one of the top three averages at seasons end.It isn't so much my style that they emulate but my consistancy.Alot of them have more hand in their ball than I do but can't control that massive hook.I've learned over the years that it's not massive hook that wins but being consistant on your spare shooting and knowing when to put the ball away when it's not reading the lanes right.Too many bowlers on my leagues refuse to switch and continue to think that they can control the ball when the lanes don't dictate.

Only incident so far was scenic applause from neighboring lanes after converting a Greek Church in league.

Yes.  Every now and then I bowl against a team where one of the members says something like "You're a good bowler," "You have a nice roll," and/or "I like your style."  Just simple complements like that.  They're usually bowlers that aren't competetive at all.

Yes, I get called a "House Hack" by people who have a lower average than mine, and a "Sandbagger" by people with a higher average than mine.

Remember, though...high average on a house shot is not related to form...take the compliment and run with it.

ive been complimented before but never took it seriously cuz I always feel I can improve much more.

but I think much of my bad nights is from being stuborn and just having bad breaks. such as using too strong of a ball and leaving the 7 - 9 on a high flush shot.

but I have had several "yea congrats on the award just dont do it to us next year" (shot 290 on a game they knew they needed to win to clinch 1st place)

I did take him seriously because he's a genuinely nice guy.  I'm more of a stroker/tweener, and this guy has only been bowling a few years, so I guess he can look at me and see easy things to emulate.

Like I said, I was just surprised, the only other time I've been complimented is when an open bowler sees me shoot 250 and say I should be a pro.  Those compliments I just shrug off.  But it was nice to get a compliment from someone that understands a little about bowling.

i have had people i have bowled with over the years tell me how much better i have gotten .that makes me feel really good. Its been a struggle. I have been bowling for about10 years and this was my first year over 200,but to have other people notice and comment on the improvement ,that was great.
