As well check the direction of your pushaway. If you have developed a relaxed armswing the you could be developing flair in the swing because of poor direction in your pushaway.
As well, timing can cause this. Starting the ball to early in your approach elongates the armswing which causes the hips to be in the way at diffent points in your approach. This causes the requirement to slide away from your target. The key to a proper arm swing is that the ball should follow the 4th step (The first step in a 4 step approach, the 2nd step in a 5 step approach) into the backswing. This ensures that the hips are not in the way in the downswing after the pushaway.
Another reason for chicken winging is weight. Without the proper body aligment and the foul line, us chubby people will chicken wing it and not be able to get close to our ankles.
