Ever Have One Of These Nights?
« on: February 18, 2015, 07:47:55 AM »
Showed up and mysteriously, my equipment felt like it belonged to someone else.  Everything felt very heavy and the fit wasn't quite right (even after adjusting tape).  My first warm-up shot, of the maybe 6 total, that was thrown at half speed across the middle, ended up missing the 2 pin left.  Ramping up to full speed, confirmed the lack of "hold" anywhere on the lane.  Switched to my weakest ball for the last two warm up shots, only to find that I can't seem to get out of the thumb cleanly and tugged both through the face.  League starts and after 5 frames, I have accumulated two splits and half of the back row on the score sheet.  Continue down this path, fighting over reaction on the lanes and actually getting out of the ball clean enough to throw a decent shot.  It happened twice.  Games two and three, I managed to throw a few better shots, but being forced inside 4th arrow generally yields awful carry and this night was no exception.  Ended the night with leaving eight single pins in the back row, a 7-10, a 8-10, and a handful of other "designer" splits.  Covered all make-able spares and still didn't break 600  :'(
To rub salt in the wounds, other team on our pair (180 average bowlers) had best night of year, all shot between 630 and 680.

One of the more frustrating nights I can remember in recent times...

If you haven't had a crazy night at the bowl you must only bowl once a year...

I tried practicing yesterday on a lane that hadn't been oiled yet from the previous day.  The previous day was President's Day, which meant open play with house balls all day long.  Not only couldn't I get anything to hook, it wouldn't even wrinkle!!

Pulled up the report of how many games had been bowled on that lane and it was about 70!!  70 games with house balls tends to put all the oil on the back end, and it was UGLY to say the least.  After about 6 or 7 frames I decided to work on my footwork and ignore ball reaction (or lack thereof) before I went crazy...

Lane,
I want to preface this by saying I believe you to be a much better bowler than myself and I mean no disrespect to you in this reply.

But isn't that what practice should be about? If you are worrying about your scores during a practice session, then you aren't doing it right. Practice should be about gaining/adding to your skills. Take a game and try to hit the first arrow every shot or try to make sure you are doing something correct in your footwork, etc. It should be about drills to improve your game, if a coach has given you any. The very last thing to worry about is score. I do understand that the conditions you saw may preclude you from working on certain things, like your release or other things that seeing the ball reaction can let you know if you done them correctly or not. And maybe that is what you meant, but it didn't come across as such to me. Again I mean no disrespect, just wanted to highlight what I thought was a flaw in your thinking.

I shoot 7-10 games as practice on Sunday's. Maybe 2 or 3 of them are for score, the rest are corner pins practice, release/timing, etc...but sometimes they are just fried from the night before and it's Urethane time!

Agreed Jorge,
It took an attitude adjustment on my part. I changed something with my footwork a few days earlier so at first it was playing with my mind.
Once it became clear that I wasn't going to see ball reaction I just worked on the footwork and timing while trying to ignore the score. Thanks for the insight.

I once had a night where I threw 5 straight 7-10 splits.

I once had a night where I started with the front 5 strikes.....and then proceeded to go 7-10, Big Four, 4-6, 6-7-10, and then proudly finished it off with the 4-7-10 split!!!

And I did not hit 200!  :o   It happens! Can't make this stuff up!

I have been trying to increase my rev rate to get a little more hook. I have been trying to keep my hand behind the ball more and increase my follow through and have my follow through go straighter (saw through video that I was falling off to the side). Last night in my first game I left back to back 3-7s (lefty) on balls that were light but hit the head pin. Thought I had adjusted out of it but the next game left 2 3-7-9's and of course had a pocket hit 7-10 the last game. Trying to rebuild your game can be frustrating but think it will pay off in the end.

I've had it happen before and it happens to everyone.  Last year, I was having a rough night with over/under and ended up with back to back 4-7-9-10 splits due to the ball finishing super flat.  I had never seen that before that night.  Though I did convert it once by throwing it hard at the 9-10 and sliding the 9 into the 4-7.  To follow up, I then threw a pocket 7-10, of course leaving an open by just making the 10.

The best thing when these types of nights happen is to try and pick something to work on.  For example, picking up the makeable spares is a good thing.  You can also use it to maybe focus on footwork, ball position or something like that.  Even though it may be frustrating, it can still help your overall game.

1 week later, I ended up shooting over 700 with having a great line all night.

This season I bowled 4 series under 600, 2 of them similar to what you mentioned. And I sort of figured out why my fit felt weird or my physical game was off. It all depends what I ate/drank the hour or so before leagues. High sodium foods like pizza or fries will mess me up. Fu fu coffee from Starbucks will mess me up. Along with not stretching properly or long enough before leagues. Likewise, if I don't walk 4 to 8 miles total in that week, I feel sluggish come Friday nights.
Does a round object have sides? I say yes, pizza has triangles..
