Ever have one of those nights?
« on: May 15, 2008, 11:30:48 PM »
Last night, I had one of those nights last night where nothing went right.  I should have just packed my stuff up and gone home because I was just wasting my time trying to bowl.

As soon as I put on my bowling shoes, I walked over to the table and immediately stepped in a big puddle of nearly dry Coke.  It was reduced to that sugary syrup texture, and needless to say made an absolute mess of my shoe.  I could not get it cleaned off with a wire brush even.  I had to just throw away that slide sole and go to the pro shop and buy a new one.  But of course, brand new slide sole meant I had to break it in.  So, all through practice I could barely slide and nearly killed myself several times sticking at the foul line.  Throughout the night, I would randomly stick about once every three or four frames.

I also quickly realized my thumb was swollen up very badly for some reason, and I just could NOT throw my equipment that used the switchgrip thumb insert until I took out tape.  Unfortunately, I had black tape in there, and that stuff is almost impossible to get out if you leave it in your thumbhole for a few days or even weeks.  It took me five frames to get all the tape and residue out of my thumbhole.  I had to just fire my spare ball at the headpin during that time.  When I finally got the tape out, I never could get my grip to feel right again.  It alternated between too tight and too loose no matter what I did with my tape.

And after all of this, I'm fighting a TERRIBLE ball reaction.  The Cheetah pattern is playing nothing like it did last year.  No matter what ball or release I use, I have a huge out-of-bounds from 4 to 6.  The ball just sails on forever if I try to have my breakpoint anywhere between 4 and 6.  Pretty much a guaranteed 1-2-4-10 washout.  If I go outside to the 1-2-3 board area, the ball will not recover soon enough, and I'm going to leave the 2-10.  Inside of 6?  Guaranteed split or 6-10 since the ball hooks too early.  I occasionally could find a decent line pointing the ball from the gutter to about 4 at the breakpoint, but if I missed just a hair either direction, I was leaving a difficult spare.

I missed the 2-10 by sending the 2 in front of the 10 pin.  Two frames later, I left the 3-7 and missed it by sending the 3 in front of the 7.  And I left the 2-10 again the very next frame.  Yep, just that kind of a night.

Oh, and to cap it off, my drink was leaking out of the bottom of the cup and getting all over the table.

I seriously would have been better off just throwing my spareball hard and straight at the headpin all night...  I shot 162-123-180-167 I believe.  Worst series I can ever remember bowling.  Thank God we're done with the Cheetah and moving on to the Viper pattern next week.

We have all had those type of nights. The only thing you can do is to put it behind you and move on. You know that you can bowl, do not let one bad night ruin your confidence.

sorry to hear that.... i have had those nights before, i am pretty sure we all have.

little tip for your slide sole,  i bought three soles and broke them all in during practice and open bowling, so that when one is whooped or ruined, i can switch to one that is broken in and ready to roll.

2 days ago I had been bale to attend to my club's training in the evening - and before we would start, the club youth made their training on the lanes. We have a 42' pattren right now, the lanes were nor refreshed for us, but the youth practiced 10 pins for 2 hours. It was carrydown hell, no lane was like the other (we made 6 games in doubles, changing the pairs after every 2 games), I rarely witnessed anything similar like this before. On one shot, you'd have the ball slip down the breakpoint and hit the 3-6 pocket. The next would have the ball grip some accidental dry board and overreact (we also had high temperatures and humidity that day). Gruesome! I even left a "new" weird spare in my collection (and even cleared it), a 1-2-7-8-10!

Only positive thing was that everyone struggled. I was able to grind out a 179 average through the 6 games - not that bas, overall 3rd best of 12 players.

I did have a backup that I used at another house with slicker approaches, but I lost it a few weeks ago.    I need to buy another one since I'm bowling in a tournament in that house next weekend.

When there is even a small chance of something on the floor, I put my shoe cover on the sliding foot. Also,I carry at least two slide soles of #6 & #8 and some of the others. Sticking on the approach can be deadly to your game as you soon begin to believe you will stick every time and you might as well go home.

My "One of those nights" usually begins before I ever enter the bowling center.  It generally starts with my class deciding it is a day to do nothing unless it involves disrupting the class and iritating the teacher, me

sounds like a case of "ill preparedness"   lazy with "ball maintenance", and  "limited experience" with lane play.     Sounds like a "typical house bowler" reaction.   Blame every thing but yourself.    Everything you describe is easily prevented    You just got a case of the "whines".

Sounds like you got a case of being an azzhole!  Thanks for the very helpful comment.  Now I remember why I get pissed off almost every time I read a post by you.

It's not like I could prepare for my thumb swelling badly or ruining my shoes.  When you're afraid you're going to stick at the foul line or have the ball not come off your thumb every other shot, it's hard to concentrate on how to get lined up.  I already hate the Cheetah pattern anyhow since they changed it from last year, but all this stuff making it impossible to bowl normally just made things infinitely more difficult than they needed to be.

Edit -- and I forgot to address this:  how can you call me a "typical house bowler?"  I've been able to (eventually) score well on pretty much any condition I've ever faced, including the PBA Experience league patterns.  Not only have I bowled 280 or higher in four completely different houses in the past year, I've also bowled on PBA patterns before and shot well.  I've been in the 240s, 250s, and 260s on the three moderate length patterns before in fact.  Shooting this poorly is an anomoly for me, not a usual thing.  I had never been this lost on a shot before Thursday night.

Dan, don't give this person (deadbeat, oh I mean deadbait) this satisfaction of rattling your cage.  We've all had nights like that, myself included.  I'm still new to sport/PBA patterns and as such, I have a few mental hurdles to clear.  I bowled on the Cheetah pattern last Tuesday and shot 766 (for 4) with a look that I thought was pretty good.  I just couldn't make spares to save my life and it got to me mentally.  If I had shot spares as well as I usually do, it would've been 830-850.  This pattern matches up well to my game because I like the breakpoint closer to me, no matter what part of the lane I'm playing.  There will be better nights in the future.
