Ever just have 1 of those nights?
« on: April 19, 2010, 01:53:21 PM »
In league tonight everything just went absolutely horribly.  No matter what adjustments i made, nothing worked, i couldnt carry, & i couldnt repeat shots at all.

I couldnt figure anything out, i would top the ball, chicken wing it, miss it at the bottom, miss right, tug it, grab it at the bottom, or any combiniation of those all night long.

Bleh, just kinda ranting i guess, i havent shot anything under 650 in 3+ months, & tonight i shot 550, & i only got that due to sparing some tough ones, 2 5 count washouts, a 3-4-6-7, & a 2-8-10.  Somehow i spared harder stuff with ease, but missed 3 10 pins & an 8 pin.

Ya, very normal, and very frustrating. I have had a couple of these nights in the last 4-5 months. Its like my body is there but my mind isn't, I can throw good shots but bad results seem to happen overwhelmingly.

It happens to some of the best bowlers. So it makes me feel ok.

Anyone who bowls has those nights. It's part of being human instead of throwbots. The key is to never "give in" mentally and accept it as a slump.

Stay relaxed (easier said than done sometimes) and don't be afraid to try new parts of the lane. You may not score great, but maybe you'll make spares and toss in a few strikes. That way the low games aren't quite as bad, and the good games are always acceptable.

I know exactly what you mean..

I had one of those during a tournament recently in my own house..

Got to the point where I didnt trust my ball...

Felt really bad afterwards...

That was my money...

I think these days are what makes bowling tournaments so difficult. They can really kill your *self-confidence* when it feels like everything you try to do backfires and you''re 300 under the cut, and you see people killing it all day long.

tuckingfenpin, I have been there many of times in tournaments where everyone else seems to be killing them, and I can't carry nor find the pocket with multiple lines and balls.  There was this one tournament that I bowled in this year where I couldn't carry on the left lane 1st game and shot 180 couple, and the other end of the house there were multiple games of 270 or better.

Kinalyx, I have had many nights this whole year where I have tried everything I know, but nothing worked.  I have only one 700 series the whole season in my one league with 4 series between 550 and 600.  At times, it seems that near the end of the season that people are starting to loose interest and don't focus as much as earlier in the season.  As an example for me this week, on Wednesday night I shot 751, and Friday night I had 605 (219-164-222) at a different house which I used 4 different balls and 5 different lines but couldn't get a consistent reaction.  You just have to shake it off and try your best next time.

Man...you just said a mouthful! I watched two of the better bowlers in my league, struggle like mad last nite! Kept trying to play the lanes the way they've always played them.....and that shot just wasn't there!!

I shot 716 last nite and played inside all nite long. Why?? Cause that's where the shot was! Is that my normal line that I like to play??? NO!!

But that's where the shot was! We all do it sometimes and just continually bang our heads against brick walls......and then say, GEEE, I can't figure out why I have a headache!

A few nights ago I shot 799 for three. Last night I went to a house that I have been scoring really well at for the last 8 weeks and shot 770 for four. Tried different shots, different balls, nothing was right. It just happens sometimes you just got to shake it off. Sometimes its the shot, alot of times its you but when you dwell on it is when the slump sets in.

I was absolutely terrible last night.  Shot 493. When I repeated shots, the ball would do different things.  Both lanes were messed up in different ways, plus we had lane 1/2.  Over/Under, brooklyn, no come back, missed spare after spare....you name it, it happened last night.  The really, really, really bad thing was that I was the high scorer on my team.  Got to love it!!!

I myself had one of those nights last sunday. I havn't shot under 620 in the last 4 weeks until sunday. Started out practice with 3 gutters in a row. Ball was just not moving on my normal shot, Okay. Moved way right and played straight up 8 board, ball hooked way too much. This was my weakest pearl. Tried my urethane same line. Banged out 4 in a row in practice thought okay I'm good to go.

Then all of a suddon I can't do anything right for the next 3 games! Yank it, drop my shoulder, lose my timing, you name it. By the end of the 1st game I lost all my confidance I had gained from the previous 4 weeks.

Averaging 205 and shot 507 for the night. Ouch! On top of that, roll off night for 1st place, lost all 7 and now were fighting for 5th place overall next week. So much for that $900 per man 1st place dream(4 man team).

I made all my spares sunday, I just could not strike for the life of me.

i had this happen at state a few weekends ago.  was beyond frustrating for me.  in singles, i shot something like 540.  approaches were extremely fast-- i normally slide very little and wind up a foot behind the line..was nearly fouling every shot.  my one sole tackier would have required me to plant, so i didnt use it.  in the meantime my brother shot 810 in singles (and is the leader for singles as of now).  i was determined to pull it together and do well in doubles and get him to cash in all 4 events.  doubles was epic fail.  shot about 560, while my bro shot 679 with a 190 last game.  middle game was 155.  i had no means to control the shot or slide.  the shot was playable enough for me to leave 13 7 pins during both S/D.  what a downpouring of rain on my brother's parade tho!

Had those alot this year. And it wasn't the balls that I was throwing, it was lack of concentration and lack of form and release. But I did finally come around about the end of January so I got alot of improvement to do this summer if I decide to bowl during the off-season.

Yes, absolutely happens to everyone. I'll have a month shooting near or above 1000 for 4 and then shoot a 610 for 3 on another night in the same house.
The shot changes, sometimes you have to vary the speed, the line, the ball, etc.

It's so easy to get discouraged and frustrated on any given night.  On the said night, I started out throwing the ball well, but not carrying.  Shot after shot, changing angles, speeds, 4 different balls.  Got to the pocket and rarely struck.  Confidence starts to go down and all of a sudden, you start missing easy spares.  By the 3rd game, you just want to get out of there!

I agree with the others, you just have to stay relaxed and keep executing.  Some nights things click, others not so much.  Part of the game and part of being human...  I still have to tell myself that every now and then
