Ball storage rack (how to build)?
« on: August 21, 2006, 05:57:33 AM »
I would like to build a storage rack to hold my bowling balls that are not currently in use but I still want to hold on to.  Does anyone have any building plans for this kind of project?

Rowdy,
That looks like something I was thinking of.  I am finishing my basement and have some scrap 2x4's laying around that should work.  I see some kind of black mark's under the balls on the racks.  Did you make some kind of cutout to keep the balls from rolling?
Thanks

I bought a rolll of velcro tape - I applied the "fuzzy" side to the rack itself to make small grip points to keep the bals from shifting. You will have no problem making the rack - I am very mechanically challenged and it was not difficult - The key to my rack was just making sure the frames are very level, or you can get some shifting of the balls. Good Luck!!

I put this together this weekend:

http://new.photos.yahoo.com/qstick777/album/576460762351530136/photo/294928803773852831/5

3/4" plywood for the sides,
1x4" ripped in half and notched out for holding the rails.
2x3" for the bottom bracing, and I added two more pieces to brace, just under the top rails.
1 1/2" and 1 1/4" wood poles for the rails.

I figure I have about $80 in materials, mainly because I bought the pre-cut 3/4" plywood (in 24x48" sections).  A light sanding around the whole thing to avoid splinters.

Slapped a coat of black semi-gloss paint on it Sunday, and 3 coats of spray on laquer (another $10).

I will make some changes to the next one I build - I need some storage for my shoes, towels, cleaners, etc.  All in all, it was fun to build and I don't think it looks bad for something I put together in a few hours.  I still might cut some handles on the top to make it a little easier to move.

I made mine out of 2x8 lumber and 2.5" multi-use screws. Pretty cheap.
I used a drum sander on a drill to make dimples where the balls rest to keep them evenly spaced. Worst part is...now I need to make a second one!

I got two of the Ebonite ones off eBay for $40/apiece. Shipped they were less than $60. They hold 24 balls between the two of them. Some assembly required, but if you have an electric Phillips head screwdriver you can build both in just over an hour with no fuss or mess.

The only negative to the Ebonite kit is the wood is unstained and fairly rough-hewn. If I was going to make a real presentation out of it I probably would have prepped it. But we're trying to sell our house and all I wanted them for was to get the balls off the carpet in our spare bedroom.

From a functionality standpoint, they're good.
