Title: Ever throw a ball that wasnt yours and bowl well?
Post by: storybook123 on December 21, 2017, 07:58:13 AM
My Buddy wanted me to resurface his bowing ball Tour IQ to 1000 grit, and was like why dont you throw it in league. We have very similar spans but his is just a little shorter. Well this ball didnt let me down, I went 252, 254, and had to change game 3 because I couldnt get out of the ball anymore but finished with a 216 for my best series to date of a 722. I was curious to see who else has experienced this, of throwing someone else equipment and scoring high.

I do it all the time.  Me and my buddy are very close in fiitting and use IT thumbs.  I also occasionally grab a ball from a left handed buddy of mine and use his equipment when mine is all over hooking.

storybook123,

Thank you! I think after the holidays, I will be mapping out his layout and purchasing one for myself. When you have never thrown a ball before and it works this well for you, it would be silly to not have it in my bag now.

IQ Tour has won people a whole lot of money in tournaments and is one of the better balls out there for flat patterns.  Hy-Road is cheaper and works much better for my style on house shot but every arsenal could use both.

I once bought a Byte off of facebook and got it within a couple days. Fit my hand pretty good and so i decided to throw in league that Thurs. Shot 300 first game with it. Was pretty cool.

I’ve done it for years..... I also have been so accustomed to it that I have the nickname ‘ballstar’  because of always using everybody else’s equipment (even more than all of my own balls) because of what I can do to a ball  (including House balls).

Lol I have the opposite problem.  People have problems keeping my equipment on the lane since with my high axis tilt and low revs I drill everything max flare and keep a shit ton of surface on it.

I don't use others equipment during league/competition but during a demo day I threw 10 in a row with a 607ASE that was generically drilled to fit a lefty with the same approximate span.

I obviously bought one afterwards.

Borrowed a friends original black hammer once, and shot 300 with it. He gave it to me (he hated it anyway), and I still have it. It’s my spare ball now!

Much like Phoneman and Leftybowler70, I have done this for years as well. I have a partner who actually got me into bowling, and who is constantly complaining about his balls not working, and having to get a new one.

Needless to say, I have a basement half-full of balls he's donated to me that I then score like crazy with and never even alter much, other than clean them!

Since we still bowl league together, I will sometimes grab whatever he's using and start throwing it. This year, he's gotten smart. He's gone to the switch-grip thumb slugs. I can't throw those because the ball just falls off my hand!

He's just jealous cause I throw it better! LOL!

A friend of mine shot 300/800 with two balls that weren't his and house shoes because he forgot all his stuff at home.

To answer the OP's question, yes.

I was in our youth travel league, but still using a conventional grip Gyro, and starting my first stint into non-conventional (read: house ball) layouts.. IIRC, it was barely 1/16th sideweight.

Longtime friend of mine let me borrow his Fab Blue Hammer while he was on a tear with his P7 at the time. I end up shooting my best series ever atthe time. His ball had some major fingerweight and sideweight in it with a balance hole, but we had the same span, so it worked out for me...

Two weeks later I end up getting a Blue Hammer myself, 3/8th sideweight, and shoot high series for the league that season.

That ball is still in my bag, and may get one last hurrah out before the BW Urethane comes in.

BL.

Way back, right before I moved up to fifteen pounds, in order to test how it would feel for me, my pro shop owner, with whom I have a similar span, his just a bit shorter, let me try out his Brunswick Aura, and while I don't remember the exact scores, I ended up shooting my first 700 something. That is still my best series from my old style, before I learned how to actually hook the ball.

I have a friend that was throwing Track stuff a little before I started, and his span was close to mine, he used grips and had a little more reverse in his thumb. I tried out his Revmaster, and fell in absolute love with it. Couldn't miss. Couldn't get him to sell it to me, and by the time I was throwing Track, it was gone. Ball was the bomb, though.

growing up, I used to throw some of my dad's equipment as we had similar spans, ect.

One in particular I remember was his/my El-Nino X-it.  Dad threw maybe 5 games on it; hated it.  couldn't get it to roll the way he wanted.  we go to a tournament, I am struggling and on a whim he offer the X-it.  it rolled great.

I was able to salvage 620 something in team, had a 680 in doubles and a low 700 in singles

ultimately, I kept it and bought him another ball for Christmas.

Since I gave him his La nina, a ball that he went on to throw all of his 3 300's and his only 800 (which still stands as the house record for series where he bowled), I think it worked out for him

Just a couple of funny stories about using others' equipment.

We used to have a 5.00 pot game late after league.  Pin setter mechanic came up one night and was watching.  Someone asked if he wanted to bowl.  No one had ever seen him bowl.  He was from Bermuda. Kind of a stranger to all of us.  He said he would like but he didn't have a ball.   Guys offered balls if they would fit.  He found somebody"s ball he could get his fingers in.  Took off his shoes and socks, bowled barefoot, and proceeded to hold his own for the rest of the games.  It was also a LH drilled ball and he was RH.

Another story...Guy used to come in late, use a houseball, bowling in tennis shoes. held his own also.   This guy was first one I ever saw palming a ball.  No thumb or finger holes used.
