Everything hooks too much
« on: October 10, 2009, 03:25:39 AM »
All of my equipment I have hooks too much and its really frustrating.  I bought  an ebonite tornado last year figuring that would solve my problem and it has to a point but it still hooking way too much for my liking.  I usually stand around 25-30 but after a couple frames I am standing out in the nose bleeds.  I have pretty good ball speed and a good amount of revs.  My PAP is 4 3/8 and 0 up.  By looking at the drilling on it the pin is to the right of ring with the cg in the middle.  I am thinking of getting another ball but I don't know what to get since I thought the tornado was a pretty weak ball and have no idea what type of drill to put on it.  Any help would be great.

Thanks.

Then don't hook it as much! Play straighter. If the lanes are that bad hooking it up more and opening up the lane may not help you. If they are that dry urethane may be worse. All it's going to do is hook early and die and won't hit well. You would be better off with a plastic cover stock. It's either that or learn to play straighter!

3 things that will make a ball hook less....

1. ADJUSTMENTS of hand..... virtually unknown nowadays.
2. Coverstock adjustments.
3. Drilling.

it is my opinion that these are in order of relevence.....................

your tornado comes from the fatory wetsanded with a 1,000 grit abralon pad and then is polished. by having your pro shop scuff off the polish and smoothing the surface up to 4,000 abralon and repolishing the ball, this should get the ball 4-5' further down the lane before it starts hooking. you didn't state how many games are on this ball.....you may have worn off all the polish in the track area of the ball. polished balls need to be repolished on a regular basis. what type of lanes do you bowl on, wood ?  wood coated with guardian ?  wood coated with laneshield ?  synthetic lanes ?  all of these variables make a huge difference in ball reaction.

my uncle has this problem as well, 6-7 inch drills solved the problem for him, plus lots of 4k + polish surfaces

if your looking at urethane, check out the AMF Hype Urethane, great ball

hotshot187, I feel your pain. Not sure WHY you''re experiencing this, but I know why I do. I developed my release bowling with a Columbia Yellow-dot on a 38ft heavier ( for the day ) shot. You really HAD to hit the ball (a.k.a doing the ROTH) to get much hook. Being a bigger guy with strong forearms and hands made it pretty easy for me and soon became quite natural.

Todays equipment is FAR stronger than it needs to be for me. I''ve had to modify my release and incorporate much more axis tilt than before in order to get the ball through the heads cleanly enough and still control the breakpoint.

If I use my natural release, everything REACTIVE hooks, but the volume pretty much takes low flaring urethane and plastic out of play on our particular house condition.

I am going to either get an A.M.F. HYPE urethane ( for the flaring capabilities and mild cover ), or a mild covered reactive and drill it with a short pin-to-pap drilling which will make it very rolly/arcy and see what happens. I don''t get to bowl much these days (job change), but we''ll see what happens.

What time of day do you bowl...Is it a mens league or a mixed league..

Try a different drilling...

Put the pin above you MF,  and put the MB near your track...

Polish the ball...Often....

or moved to Milwaukee...

Have you tried:
Changing speed
Cutting back on the revs at release
Adding axis tilt at release
Adding loft if the heads are burnt
Moving your stance and breakpoint inside into more oil
Targeting farther down the lane
Using a very low diff ball like a Chainsaw or a ball drilled pin axis

The two balls I was looking at was the storm natural and the brunswick green avalanche.

Pass on the Green Avalanche, it'll be too strong.  Go with the Avalanche Slide if you've got your heart set on Brunswick.  If you want to stick with reactive, some manufacturers are putting out some good tame balls. Take a look at 900 Global's Link, AMF's Smoke, or MoRich's Mojave.

Maybe post a vid of you bowling as well and show what ball your throwing and how its drilled?

If you want good length put the pin under your left finger about 6" from your PAP and keep the cg in the palm.
