i seem to squeeze too much on my release. i am trying everything people are telling me to do, but i still seem to just never get a clean release. its almost like, i am going up the side of the ball but my thumb is still not out of the ball, and as such it kills the RPMs.

when i try to be more relaxed, i drop the ball in the downswing. it can be downright embarrassing. guess what: i tug the sh!t out of the next ball i throw.

i fear i may be squeezing it, and this of course would definitely rank high on the 'why Don revs like a girl' scoreboard.

are any of you guys performing any excersizes or drills to improve your grip? my perhaps i am having issues with my wrist breaking in the downswing??

any and all ideas/comments/insights/insults welcome...

In short if your squeezing your ball is probably not fitting properly and either your thumb pitch or span or fingers pitches or all three could need changing.  There is lazy wrist and weak wrist.  Take the ball you bowl with and put your hand in it hold it straight down beside your body if you can curl your wrist using only the muscles in it then you have plenty of wrist strength and it is just lazy in your backswing.  If you can't do this and you do have a weak wrist try this.

Its very high quality and cheap and adjustable and it really works cause I use one.  I had a more expensive one I got from a boxing magazine and I snapped it when my wrist got stronger, I have yet to break this one.

I should just quit bowling, oh wait I already tried that.

If you either squeeze or drop the ball, it definitely does NOT fit.

I thought I had a good fit, without squeezing. Then we tweaked my thumb pitch (thanks, BrunsRicH) a little to see if there was anything to be gained. All of a sudden, I knew I must have been squeezing before, because I'm definitely NOT now. I have a wonderful, clean, quick release. Awesome.

i have a tight fit, and i do loft.

inside and some of the inside-top of thumb knuckle is calloused, occasional reddening/callous on outside of knuckle. little bump at the base of my thumb in the palm, from the lip of the slug.

i am going to talk to my driller, and see if my pitch is f*(ked. this is getting cumbersome: i need a better release.

This may indicate that the thumb hole is not as "tight" as you think.  Try making it a bit uncomfortable for a few games during practice.  If you don't like it, simply remove the tape.  --------------------

vintage,

You bring up an interesting and potential point.

DonSVO,

You haven't mentioned it before. Do you realize that even with a perfect fitting thumb, you may still have to insert and remove tape as your thumb swells and shrinks with many environmental and personal factors? How much your thumb shrinks and swells is personal to the bowler. Mine does, a lot; many people's don't. Some people's thumb does and they ignore it or are not aware or hate to change or adjust the tape.

If you're not doing that and your thumb does change, then any talk of thumb hole adjustments is moot.

charlest, i am the king of taping/re-taping my thumb slugs, LOL. i go thru 20 pieces of black tape in 2 weeks, with ease. i use about 3-4 tape residue cloths a week from removing the white tape up front.

my thumb always swells after a game or 2. my problem seems to be 'squeezing'. my new span changes and gripless finger drillings have helped tremendously. my thumb callousing is almost gone now., when it was horrible before

JPR,

If his problem is a "lazy" wrist, what should he do?

I think it was charlest that put me onto this.
I have purchased a storm strong arm wrist support.
I only use it now and again in practice to get the feel of where the thumb should be exiting and it tells me whether Im breaking or alowing my wrist to break.
As I say I only use it for a game or so in practice and not every time I practice but it has definatly given me a FEEL for a good release. The feeling I think is what you are after?
If you have a friend who has one or something similar it may be worth asking them if could use it next time you practice.
