What do you guys think?
« on: February 21, 2007, 07:03:53 AM »
I participate every now and then in a tournament called ABTA here in Southern California. It is a weekly tournament with a top prize of $1,000.00. The tournament has your normal brackets and side pots and stuff. It is a nice tournament to partake in. However, this Sunday's tournament was quite a different story. I did not bowl good. That's fine. It's not a big deal. People bowl bad all the time.

I know a guy who averages about 205 on my Tuesday night league. However, in his Monday night league he averages 185 (4 Rounds: Modified House Shot, Dry Shot, Oiled Shot, Sport Shot), and he books 186 from last season. He presented that information to the tournament director, and was granted 21 sticks of handicap.

He proceeds to get into 20 brackets, and all of the sidepots, winning most of them by going +256. He did the same in the semi-finals by going +152. However, the tournament director decided to disqualify him for "BOWLING TOO GOOD." Can that be done??? He presented proper average requirements showing that he not only averages 185 in a league, but had that as his book average on his USBC card. They gave him a free entry to their next tournament with 4 stick of handicap.

His response to them: I'll win your tournament, and donate all the money right back to you

He just wanted to bowl. The guy has cash, he didn't need the money.

Do you think this is fair??

I have decided to boycott this tournament and focus on ABT or Donkee Tour better.

-Jon

I've never heard of disqualifying someone for bowling too good. I can see maybe re-rating them and lowering their handicap. Especially if he provided his avg's from this year and last with his USBC card.

In some tournaments, the director has the right to "re-rate" a player.  If his scores are consistently WAY above the average of said bowler, this may occur.  However, they just cant look at someone and say you dont win because you were too good.

That's what I would have figured as well. Not that it really matters to me or anything but that's just not the right thing to do. No refunds either. Kind of sucked for him.

Rerate him, yes.

Disqualify him?  Absolutely not!

You don't disqualify someone for "bowling too good", you need to have rules in place in any tournament, especially singles tournaments, to rerate bowlers who bowl well above their normal average on a regular basis, you must protect the integrity of your tournament, if its handicapped, from the possibility of sandbaggers swooping  in and taking the top spots on a regular basis.  We ran sweepers years ago and rerated bowlers on a regular basis, we kept the scores after each tournament and kept a close watch on those who cashed on a regular basis.  But we never ever disqualified someone out of hand simply for having a good day.

If he averages 205 in a league where he has more than 21 games this is the average that he should take as it is more than 10 pins higher than last years book.

I'm not certain, but I think that it would be mandatory that he take the higher average because it's 10 pins higher.

That is what I was thinking. They probably disqualified him because he used an incorrect average not because he " bowled to well"

I believe DerHornen and others are correct, but that's only if that rule is used.  I would be surprised if it isn't.  Also, there's usually a clause in tournament rules that pretty much makes the tournament director omnipotent to do whatever he wants.  Therefore, Bob is God in ABTA World.  Doesn't make his decisions right or legitimate, but unfortunately, his word is the last word.

Not all tournaments are like that.  Some have that rule, some don't.  Some modify it to be a 15-pin difference or some other number.  But not all are like that.

The tournament series I bowl in has 2 divisions handicap and scratch.  I bowl in the scratch, but the handicap rules are pretty simple.  They take your highest year book, and give you handicap off of that.  Once you get a certain number of games in, they use your tournament average and the amount of pins you get changes after each tournament you bowl in.

A Friend of mine yearbooked at 185 or something like and was getting almost 40 sticks game.  He's been taking lessons and practicing every day and he's improved his league average by 20+ pins.  He's making a killing in handicap divisons.  He still sucks on the tougher patterns usually finishing in the bottom 5, which keeps his tournament average low enough to where he still gets a ton of pins.

That is the number one reason, I do not get into handicap pots or tournaments.
